Can you travel out of the country on a soon to expire passport?

The question of whether or not an American can travel abroad on a soon to expire passport is asked more often than most other questions. It is not uncommon for the bearer of a valid passport to arrive at the airport only to discover that the passport is not "valid" for the flight's destination. This is due to the fact that many countries require a passport have six months of validity remaining before a visitor will be allowed to enter.

The initial question submitted by one of our visitors discusses this question in a general way. You can read the comments to find information about specific destinations.

Question: My passport expires in April. The person in the Post Office just told me that I cannot travel within 6 months of the expiration date. Is this correct?

Answer: The answer to your question depends on your destination. Many countries in the world require your passport have at least six months validity remaining beyond your visit before they will allow you to enter. Others only require 3 months of validity while still others only require your passport be valid at time of entry.

If the country you plan to visit requires six months of validity then you will need to renew your passport before your departure date. Check the foreign entry requirements for the country or countries you plan to visit.

Routine processing can take up to 6 weeks, 8 weeks or more depending on the demand at the time you apply. It takes 2-3 weeks for expedited service. Faster service requires you apply at a regional agency.

If you need to apply for a passport renewal, you can learn what requirement you need to do that here

Question: Hi here i am again. So I can still travel to Philippines? How about the 6 months validity? I was wondering if they're gonna hold me at the airport if I have an issue. My Philippine passport will only be valid for 21 days if I fly December 28, 2017 then it expires January 18, 2018. I am a U.S. green card holder. I'm just concerned about the 'at least 6 months validity in passport' requirement by the Philippine immigration.

Answer: The six-month passport validity requirement is only applicable to U.S. passport holders. Since you are just a U.S. green card holder and still a Philippine passport holder, this rule does not apply to you. You may enter the Philippines without a problem even with just 21 days left on your passport.

Child passport valid 5 months beyond the arrival date to US
by: Gabriella

Question: I have a question. If my children's passports expire mid-March 2018, can I still travel on the 30th of September to Europe (Amsterdam, Netherlands and then Budapest, Hungary) and come back on the 16th of October and renew the passport through the embassy? They are fine with that. I know some say that PASSPORTS MUST BE VALID FOR SIX MONTHS BEYOND RETURN DATE. Is that the case? Should we renew the passports before the trip or still OK if we renew after we are back to Minneapolis? We still have 5 months and for the embassy shouldn't be any issue. We are here on L1 and L2 visa. Can you please advice? Thanks.
Gabriella

Answer: Please contact the Embassy of the Netherlands about entry requirements for passport holders of your home country. Their answer should determine whether or not you need to renew your children's passports before or after your trip.

Question: My son was denied to board flight or check-in on June 7th 2017 as his US passport is expiring on Sept. 06 2017. We are supposed to go to India via Washington DC-Frankfort-Chennai. I just noticed that my daughter's passport expires the on 23rd of April which is our return date. She is 6 years old. Answer: Saint Lucia requires that U.S. passports have at least 6 months remaining validity counting from your intended date of departure. Because of this requirement, you need to apply for a new passport for your daughter before your trip.

Question: I have to travel to Venezuela (my home country) to renew my passport that's about to expire on May 10th because I haven't been able to get it done with the consulate in the US. The travel date is april 25th (a few weeks before it expires). If I'm traveling to my home country would the passport still need to be 6 months valid? I should also say that I'm traveling with a 4 hour layover in Mexico. Thanks in advance.

Answer: We do not have information concerning passport requirements for non-U.S. citizens. Usually, a passport only needs to be valid at time of reentry to country of origin. We recommend you contact the airlines, the Embassy of Venezuela or both concerning this issue.

Question: Hello, I am traveling in May 2016 to Turkey and my US passport expires in Dec. 2016. Do I need to renew my passport before I go? I have 7 months from my trip date till it's expires.

Answer: You need a valid passport and visa to travel to Turkey. Your passport must have at least 60 days beyond the expiration date of your visa, visa exemption, or residence permit. Turkish tourist visas are generally valid for 6 months, therefore it is recommened that U.S. citizens have a passport that is valid for eight months beyond entry date.

Passports should have enough blank space to allow for Turkish entry and exit stamps. If there is not enough space for entry and exit stamps in your passport, you will be denied entry into Turkey. Since your passport will have less than 8 months of validity, you may want to apply for a renewal.

Happy if you can answer these few questions
by: Kimberly Russell

I have a few questions, that I would be so happy if you could answer. My husband and I live overseas. Our children and I are all American citizens with US passports. We are traveling home (USA) over the summer. Here are the questions:

Question 1: My husband's visa expires on July 5, 2016 and we were planning to travel by July 1, 2016. Does he need to renew his visa before we travel? (we will probably file for a green card or an extension of stay depending on my mom's health)

Answer 1: A visa must be valid at the time a traveler seeks admission to the United States, but the expiration date of the visa (validity period/length of time the visa can be used) has no relation to the length of time a temporary visitor may be authorized by the Department of Homeland Security to remain in the United States.

Your husband will be able to remain in the United States during his authorized period of stay, even if his visa expires during the time he is in the United States. Since his admission stamp or paper Form I-94 documents his authorized stay and is the official record of his permission to be in the United States, it is very important to keep inside his passport.

Question 2: My 2 older children's American passports expire on June 11, 2016 so if we decided to travel on June 9 and arrive on June 10th are their passports still valid for entry to the USA?

Answer 2: A U.S. passport only needs to be valid at time of entry to the United States.

Question 3: My youngest son's American passport expires on November 28, 2016 so if we travel by July 1, 2016, will his passport still be valid for entry to the USA.

Answer 3: Yes, his passport will be valid.

Note: You can apply for new passport for your children at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Processing time is usually shorter when applying at these locations that when the applications are submitted in the United States.

Question: Our children are 12 and 13. Their passports expire while we are in the Bahamas next week. Will we have a problem entering back to U.S? They have birth certificates.

Answer: All U.S. citizens are required to present a valid U.S. passport in order to enter The Bahamas, as well as to enter or re-enter the United States when traveling by air. We recommend you contact the airline to see if they will allow your children to board. If they will not be allowed to board, you will need to visit the nearest passport agency in order to expedite the passport applications.

Since the Bahamas only requires a passport be valid at the time of entry, the airline may allow them to board. In that case, we recommend you visit the U.S. Embassy in Nassau in order to get emergency passports for their return to the United States.
