Can you travel out of the country on a soon to expire passport?

The question of whether or not an American can travel abroad on a soon to expire passport is asked more often than most other questions. It is not uncommon for the bearer of a valid passport to arrive at the airport only to discover that the passport is not "valid" for the flight's destination. This is due to the fact that many countries require a passport have six months of validity remaining before a visitor will be allowed to enter.

The initial question submitted by one of our visitors discusses this question in a general way. You can read the comments to find information about specific destinations.

Question: My passport expires in April. The person in the Post Office just told me that I cannot travel within 6 months of the expiration date. Is this correct?

Answer: The answer to your question depends on your destination. Many countries in the world require your passport have at least six months validity remaining beyond your visit before they will allow you to enter. Others only require 3 months of validity while still others only require your passport be valid at time of entry.

If the country you plan to visit requires six months of validity then you will need to renew your passport before your departure date. Check the foreign entry requirements for the country or countries you plan to visit.

Routine processing can take up to 6 weeks, 8 weeks or more depending on the demand at the time you apply. It takes 2-3 weeks for expedited service. Faster service requires you apply at a regional agency.

If you need to apply for a passport renewal, you can learn what requirement you need to do that here

Travel to China in Aug 2024 if my passport in Jan 2025
by: Victor

Question: Can IC travel to china in Aug 2024 if my passport expires in Jan 2025?

Answer: Hello, Victor. China's government requires at least 6 months of validity on your passport to allow entry. Yours is one month short of this requirement so you need to renew your passport soon.

Currently, standard processing takes 6 to 8 weeks. If you submit soon, your new passport MAY arrive by mid-July or later. Since you will also need a China visa, I strongly recommend expedited service.

You can request this service in two ways:

1. Via passport services' expedited service. Just add $60 to the application fee and mail your renewal application to the expedited service address. This will take 2 to 3 weeks to process excluding the time it takes for the application to arrive at the processing center and for the new passport to get to you. This can take up to 2 weeks each way.

2. Through a private passport expediter like Travel Visa Pro. They can get your passport in as fast as 2 days, depending on which speed of service you require. They will also ensure that all your documents are complete to eliminate the possibility of delays caused by missing requirements.

Please note that passport services' processing times may change without prior notice and shipping times vary between states.

Is he able to enter Turkey since it will be less than 6 months before his passport expires? Also, will he be able to come back to the USA without any problems? Thanks in advance.

Minor traveling, passport expires after return
by: Anonymous

Question: We are traveling on 7/30 to 8/13 to Greece. And my 6-year-old daughter's passport will expire on 10/19.

I read on the US customs and border protection page that there is an agreement with the US and specific countries that are allowing people to travel as long as passport is not expired during travel time. I need to confirm this before we show up to the airport.

Is this correct? And how can I make sure I don’t have issues at the airport with this if it is true? Thank you!

Answer: While it is true that U.S. citizens may enter some countries as long as their passport remain valid during their stay, Greece is not one of them.

As party to the Schengen Agreement, Greece requires U.S. citizens to have at least 3 months validity remaining on their passports counting from the bearer's planned date of exit from Greece or any other Schengen country. Your son's passport does not meet this requirement unfortunately.

In order to get his passport in time for your trip, you need to schedule an appointment and apply at a regional passport agency. Appointments are extremely limited at this time so you need to be a little more patient in trying to secure one.
