Can you travel out of the country on a soon to expire passport?
The question of whether or not an American can travel abroad on a soon to expire passport is asked more often than most other questions. It is not uncommon for the bearer of a valid passport to arrive at the airport only to discover that the passport is not "valid" for the flight's destination. This is due to the fact that many countries require a passport have six months of validity remaining before a visitor will be allowed to enter.
The initial question submitted by one of our visitors discusses this question in a general way. You can read the comments to find information about specific destinations.
Question: My passport expires in April. The person in the Post Office just told me that I cannot travel within 6 months of the expiration date. Is this correct?
Answer: The answer to your question depends on your destination. Many countries in the world require your passport have at least
six months validity remaining beyond your visit before they will allow you to enter. Others only require 3 months of validity while still others only require your passport be valid at time of entry.
If the country you plan to visit requires six months of validity then you will need to renew your passport before your departure date. Check the
foreign entry requirements for the country or countries you plan to visit.
