Can you renew with Form DS-82?
Urgent travel does not change the basic renewal rules. You can generally renew with Form DS-82 when all of the following are true:
- You can submit your most recent U.S. passport book or card.
- Your most recent passport is not significantly damaged.
- It was issued when you were age 16 or older.
- It was issued within the last 15 years.
- It was issued in your current name, or you can document the name change.
If your passport was lost, stolen, significantly damaged, issued before age 16, or too old to renew, you may need to apply in person with Form DS-11 instead.

Expedited renewal by mail is usually the lower-cost choice when the current processing and mailing timeline comfortably fits your trip. Private courier service is also an option if you want guided application review, tracking, or a faster service level than standard expedited mail.

When direct government service may be the better fit
If minimizing out-of-pocket cost is your top priority and you can easily use expedited mail or attend a regional agency appointment, applying directly may be the better value. Either route still requires you to meet the same government passport eligibility and documentation rules.
