Last name change

Question: Hi there,

I got married in November 2019 and received my first passport in Sept 2019. It’s been almost exactly a year since the issuance of my first passport. Can I still submit for no fee to get my passport updated to my new last name even though it was issued 9/9/2019? I forgot about it due to covid and not being able to use it anyways!

Answer: You should submit before September 9th in order to waive the fees. Please use Form DS-5504 for your application.

Renewed but didn't receive
by: Anonymous

Question: I sent all of the required documents to update my passport to my married name about 2 years ago. We are booking an international trip, and when I went to look for my new passport in my files, I realized that the envelope contained my old passport (with holes punched in the bottom) along with my marriage certificate. I don't think the new one ever arrived. And if it did, it's long gone.
Do I order a new one as a "lost passport" or do I have to go through the name change process again?

Answer: The first thing you need to do is report the passport as lost by calling 1-877-487-2778. Please note that when reported as lost and is later found, it can no longer be used for travel.

The process to replace a lost passport is similar to applying for the first time. You need to submit the requirements in person at a local acceptance facility.

1. Form DS-64
2. Form DS-11
3. Evidence of U.S. citizenship plus photocopy
4. Proof of identity plus photocopy
5. One new passport photo
6. Payment for fees

The passport will be issued in your married name as long as the ID you present with the application bears the same name.

by: Anonymous

Question: I got a passport book in 2016 that is good for 10 years. I got married in May 2018. I’m just now filling out the renewal form to get my new last name on it. What would be the fee for that? I heard you have a year from the day you get married to change your name free of charge. Is that true?

Question: I had to renew my passport 03/02/2017 before it expired. I just got married so I missed the 12 month mark to get a free name change by 1 1/2 weeks. Can it be within 12 months? Or is it 365 days to get it for free? I'm trying to avoid the $110 since I just paid it last year. Thanks.

Answer: Hello, Angie. The no-fee name change period is counted from the issuance date printed on the passport. If it has been more than 365 days since issuance, you will need to pay the renewal fee to change the name on your passport.

You can still avoid paying the fee by not changing the name on your passport. You may continue using the passport in your maiden name as long as you book tickets in the same name to avoid issues when you travel.

Question: I will be married in June this year, but am still finishing studies abroad. I would like to change my last name when I marry but do not have the time to wait for a new passport to come in before I leave the country and my return flight is currently under my maiden name. Can I change my name from overseas? Should I continue to go by my maiden name until my studies are over? How long do I have to make an official name change request after I am married?

Answer: You may continue to use the passport in your maiden name until you're done with your studies overseas. Or you can wait until you're back overseas before changing your name. In fact, this is the most uncomplicated way to go since your ticket is also booked in your maiden name.

Name change after marriage
by: Anonymousa

Question: We are planning a trip out of the country in two weeks. I just realized my name on my passport has not changed. I still have my drivers license with my maiden name. My passport says my maiden name. Do I have to Change my passport? Or can I just purchase my ticket and use my maiden name on my flight ticket? I don't think I will have time to change it and recieve a new passport before we leave. If I have to change my name on passport, what is the quickest way for me to do this?

Answer: Passport Services recommends that American citizens travel with passports in their current legal names. Application for a name change should be submitted within six weeks of the name change.

It is possible to get a name change in a passport within two weeks at a regional passport agency. If you do not live near a regional agency or cannot take the time to visit one, you can authorize a registered passport courier to submit the application on your behalf.

Having said that, many women who change their names by marriage choose to continue using their passport in their maiden name until the passport expires. Be aware that we have received messages from women who were delayed due to the name difference but have never heard of anyone being denied boarding. We recommend you contact the airlines concerning this issue.

no name change on passport

Question: I`m going abroad the 18th. My passport has my maiden name but I have been married for a year and have not had my married name added to my passport. What will happen?

Answer: TSA'a Secure Flight Program requires the name on your ticket match the name in your passport. If it does not and you are unable to change it, you may need to change the name in your passport before you travel. Please contact the airlines for confirmation.

You can get the name in your passport changed within 5 business days at a regional passport agency.

What is the correct PLACE of name change: Vancouver BC or SF, CA? Thanks!

Answer: The place of name change is the location where your marriage certificate was registered.
