Question: I have a current passport and I’ve recently gotten married. I understand the fees and photos and forms plus the time it takes. My question sounds a little silly, but will I get the original passport sent back? Like a "used" driver’s license, does it get a hole punch? I’d like it for a keepsake. Thank you.

Answer: Hi, Nicole. Yes, your old passport will be sent back to you once the process is completed. It will arrive in a separate mailing from the new passport.

When I send the passport, what happens to the stamp from my recent international visit, will it be transfer to the new book? Can I send a copy of the marriage certificate? If not, will it be returned to me along with the old passport. Please advise. Thank you.

Answer: Both the old passport and the marriage certificate will be returned to you once the renewal with name change is completed. The old passport will be invalidated but will remain intact with all the stamps you acquired from previous travels.

Question: The name on my license doesn’t contain both of my last names. Will this be a problem when applying for a passport for the first time?

Answer: It will not be a problem as long as the name you enter in the application form is supported by either your evidence of U.S. citizenship or license.

Question: I got married in 2015 and my passport doesn't expire until 2022. Do I need to pay the $110 and when doing so? Will I be issued another passport reflecting 10 years from my current expiration date? I'm just trying to make sure my first initial purchase of the passport was not a waste.

Answer: You may continue using your passport in your maiden name until it expires, so as not to waste the remaining 4 years of validity. Just remember to book tickets in your maiden name to make sure it matches your passport.

In case you do decide to apply for a passport name change, you will need to pay for the $110 renewal fee. You will the be issued a new passport with 10 years validity.

Question: Are there any exceptions for that $110 fee? I was issued my passport 1/20/17 and its now 2/8/18. I just missed the 12 month rule! Is there a way to get an exception since it's only be not even 13 months!

Answer: Hi, Monique! Only name change applications made within a year of issuance are free of charge. Since you are beyond the 12-month mark, you need to apply for a passport renewal and pay the fee.

Having said that, you may choose not to renew you passport instead. You may continue to use your passport until it expires in 9 years. You just have to remember to book tickets in the name that appears in your passport to avoid issues at airports and border crossings.

Maiden or Married name change

Question: I am taking a trip in May of this year. My current passport has my maiden and married name on it. I am in the process of divorce (papers has been served). I am waiting on a court date. I will be dropping my married name. Does it make sense or do I have to change my name over and then pay to get it changed back to my maiden name? I really want to resolve this issue asap.

Answer: We are uncertain what your situation is. If your current passport is already in your married name, why would you need to change it? Your current passport is valid until the date of expiration. You can use it travel. However, you should book flights in the same name that is in your passport. After your divorce is finalized and you receive the official divorce decree, you can apply for a passport name change.

Marriage and updating

Question: My passport was issued in 2013 prior to my wedding. I have legally changed my name, but have not changed the name on my passport. Is my passport still valid though my ID and passport have different names, or do I need to update my passport?

Answer: Your passport is valid until the date of expiration. You can continue to use your current passport until it expires although we do recommend that you update it to your current legal name. You will find the requirements to change the name in your passport here. If you decide not to request a name change, you should book flights in the same name that is in your passport.

Why does it say $0-165 on the name change fees?
by: Anonymous

Question: I see everyone is saying that it's only $110 to change your name if your passport is over a year old. But when I look at the passport fees for a name change, it says $0-$165 and it varies. This makes no sense and doesn't help figuring out how much to pay. Is it $110 or $165?

Answer: The total cost to change the name on a passport depends on several factors including when your passport was issued, what type of passport you want and whether or not you have acceptable proof of the name change.

There is no cost if your current passport was issued less than 12 months ago and you can provide acceptable evidence of the name change.

If your passport was issue more than 12 months ago, you must pay the application fee which is $110 for a passport book and $30 for a passport card. You can choose to get either one or both.

If you are already using a different name but cannot document the change with a court order, divorce decree, or marriage certificate then you must apply in person and pay the $25 execution fee in addition to the application fee. If you request both a passport book and passport card at one of these locations, the total paid for fees will be $165.

The cost cited above do not include optional fees such as overnight delivery of the new passport ($20.66) and expedited service ($60).

You can find a complete list of fees here.

Name change renewal + photo
by: Anonymous

Question: Passport name change (issued over a year ago) so the need will be to the complete form, include marriage certificate and $110 (unless prefer to expedite). Is this correct so far?

Additional question; since this is now a passport renewal (no ammendments) - can I submit a new photo since they're printing it? Purpose: Hair color has also changed and it would be preferable to render a more accurate (current) photo to be renewed w/ name change.

Thanks for your response!

Mail a completed form DS-82, previously-issued passport, a recent passport photo, original or certified copy of marriage certificate and payment for fees to the address on the application form.

Just got married

Question: I just got married and we are going to Jamaica for our honeymoon. I don't feel I should have to pay another $110 to renew it with my new last name. I called the Jamaica Embassy which I got the number from a person who works for US passport services and the lady from the Embassy told me I can travel with my old passport and my marriage license. Is this safe to do? I would hate to not be able to board for my honeymoon or not get into their country or back into my own.

Answer: If your passport was issued less than one year ago, there is no fee to change the name.

You can continue to use your current passport until it expires. TSA's Secure Flight Program requires the names on your ticket and passport match.

That is ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!
