Question: I don't have a passport. I plan on going on my cruise in about three weeks. What is the best way to get my passport in time and how much would it cost? I have a regional agency in Miami that I can go to but I'm looking for most cost effective way to get my passport in time.

Answer:
1. Check Cruise Document Requirements
First, confirm travel document requirements with your cruise line. Passports are not required for re-entry into the U.S. when traveling on a closed-loop cruise. However, a passport may still be needed for entry into countries on your itinerary. Be sure to contact the cruise line directly.
2. Passport Book vs. Passport Card
If a passport is required, you can choose between a passport book or a passport card:
- Passport Card: Valid for land/sea travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean only
- Passport Book: Required for all international air travel and all other destinations
Even if a card suffices, consider getting the book. In the event of an emergency requiring air travel back to the U.S., only the passport book will be accepted. Without it, you'd need to visit the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate, which could delay your return significantly.
3. Timing and Expedited Options
To receive your passport in 3 weeks, you must expedite the process. Applying in person (new) or by mail (renewal) is a risk. This currently is taking 2 to 3 weeks.
To be safer, consider applying at the Miami Passport Agency. This method is much faster, and the fees are the same. The Miami agency does expedited passport cards.
If you are unable to visit the Miami agency or there is no slot available, you can contract a reliable passport courier that is registered with the U.S. Department of State.
4. Cost-Efficient Options
- Most cost-efficient: Don't get a passport if your cruise doesn't require one.
- Next best: Apply for a passport card if allowed.
- Full passport book: Not required for closed-loop cruises but great to have in case of an emergency.
Note: Be sure to verify current execution fee and expedited processing fees.
Keep in mind, only the passport book prepares you for emergency air travel back to the U.S.
