Entry Requirements for U.S. Citizens: Laos

Passport & Visa Requirements
- Passport validity: Must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry.
- Blank pages: At least two blank visa pages are required.
- Visa required: U.S. citizens must have a visa to enter Laos.
- Visa options: Tourist visa on arrival at certain airports and land borders, or apply online for a Laos e-Visa via a reliable provider or thruogh the Laos government portal.

Entry Procedures
- Stay duration: Tourist visas or visas on arrival typically allow 30 days in Laos.
- Visa extension: Tourist visas can be extended once in Laos (through the immigration office in Vientiane) for an additional period, often up to another 60 days.
- Documents required: Passport valid for 6 months, 2 blank pages, passport-size photo, proof of onward or return travel, hotel booking or proof of accommodation, and payment of the visa fee.
Health & Vaccinations
- Required vaccinations: None specifically required for travelers from the U.S.
- Yellow fever: A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission.
- Recommended vaccinations: Routine vaccines (tetanus, etc.) and others such as rabies may be recommended for certain travelers, especially in rural areas.
Traveling with Minors
- Parental authorization: No special requirements exist, but carrying a birth certificate and parental consent letter is recommended if a minor is traveling alone or with only one parent.
Additional Restrictions & Considerations
- Currency restrictions: Import or export of Lao currency is restricted; declaring foreign currency over approximately US$2,500 (or equivalent) may be required.
- Unexploded ordnance: Exercise caution in rural areas due to risks from unexploded bombs leftover from past conflicts.
- Visa overstay: Overstaying your visa can result in fines and difficulties when exiting the country.
