Answer: It might be a problem. If you are traveling soon, it may be best to book tickets to match the passport and have the error corrected when you get back.

Question: I just received my daughter’s first passport and noticed they spelled her name incorrectly. I see that it could be as long as 7-9 weeks again to receive a new one. Is this true? I plan to travel in June. How can I get it quicker?

Answer: If you are traveling in 14 days or less, you may contact the NPIC at 1-877-487-2778 for an appointment.

Alternatively, you may book your child's tickets in the spelling that appears on the passport and have the error corrected when you return.

Misspelled My First Name

Answer: You may send your Indian birth certificate with a certified translation and a copy of your marriage certificate.

Question: We expedited my daughter's passport for travel that is occurring 3 weeks from the day of this post. We received the passport last night. Her surname is listed as "Doe Miss". Given name is "Jane Mary". "Miss" is an error. Will she be able to travel with this error? If I completed Form 5504 and returned the passport for correction, what is the likelihood that I will receive it for travel on July 4, 2022?

Answer: It is best that you contact the NPIC at 1-877-487-2778 for an in-person correction appointment. You may start calling next week -- 14 calendar days before your trip.

Misspelled middle name error

Question: I made an expedited passport order. Two weeks after receiving it, I realized my middle name was misspelled in my passport. I am booking a ticket today for a visitation visa and I just noticed the error of one letter missing in my middle name. Is it going to work for me and my visa be approved by just booking a ticket using it as just as the name was stated in my passport? Thank you.

Answer: Yes, it should work. But I recommend that you contact the issuing office of the visa you are applying for to confirm.

Question: I submitted an application for both a passport book and card. The passport book arrived today with middle name misspelled . Do I have to wait for the passport card to arrive to ask for correction or would they send me both corrected if I sent the passport only?

Answer: It will be best to wait for the card to find out if there is an error on it as well.

Father put wrong last name on passport

Question: Sixty-four years ago my father (can't read or write) used his mother's last name for his passport. All of his documents are listed under his father's last name and he is having a extremely difficult time getting ID or changing bank account due to this error made so many years ago. How do we fix this? Even his citizenship is listed under his mother's last name. Yet all billing, banks, retirement showed his father's name. Birth certificate is lost and not accessible (93 years ago, building burned with certificate).

Answer: You can file for a court ordered name change.

Incorrect name spelling

Question: My daughter has her ticket to fly out of the country, and she received her passport and her name was spelled incorrectly. This was not her mistake as she was asked to look everything over and make sure. We have yet to receive her birth certificate back in the mail... and her flight is in a month. How can we fill out the correction form with out her birth certificate, and receive her passport with her correct name, in time for her flight out? Expedite? Why should she have to pay for that fee when she applied in plenty of time? When it wasn't HER mistake. That and the inconvenience that goes with it.

Answer: Requests for a passport correction due to a printing error are processed as an expedited service. You do not need to pay to expedite the processing of the correction. The birth certificate should arrive soon. As soon as it does, you may mail the request for correction to the agency that processed the application. You daughter should get her passport in 2-3 weeks.

If she needs faster service, she can submit the request for a correction at the closest regional passport agency. There will be no need for an appointment and proof of immediate international travel. Applications submitted at a regional agency are processed in 1-8 business days.
