Wrong Address possibly
by: wormie

Question: I received a letter from the Department of State to send them the documents they needed and they provided an address.

I mailed the documents using USPS but when I asked the USPS worker to include the +4 digit number, he said it didn’t matter and the zip code he used was 20166-2000 and not 20166-1080 like it stated on the paper. Does the +4 matter and is it important? Will it affect where my documents are delivered?

I also had an expedited service fee charged to my bank. Does that mean the passport agency has received my application and documents and they are processing it?

I am just hoping the +4 digit zip code didn’t cost me to lose my documents and if the passport agency didn’t receive my documents, how did I have an expedited service fee charge? I am just trying to understand what is going on with my documents because no one has answers. Thank you.

Answer: If of you did not request expedited service, your bank should not have been charged. Please contact the NPIC at 1-877-487-2778 regarding this and your other concerns.

Lack of info
by: R. Anderson

Question: I'm trying to find the status of my passport but the process is broken as I cannot get information from the website.

First, I cannot remember my password so when I complete the process to send me a code, I get the code, plug it in, and the screen cycles and is blank. I've tried it on 2 different computers using Google Chrome and MS Edge. Nothing works.

Next, I forgot to attach a check but there is no info on who to call or what to do.

Based on the issues above, I have no idea if the State Dept. is in possession of my passport and what to do next. Am I out of luck and just sit back and wait until something comes in the mail or not?

Answer: MyTravelGov is a fairly new system in place specifically for renewal applications. There may still be issues that's why your data cannot be retrieved.

It is also possible that your application has not reached the processing center yet. Once it does and the agents notice there is no payment included, they will contact you by mail with instructions on how you can make payment.

In that case, do I need to send the new application confirmation too?

Forgot SSN
by: Anonymous

Question: Just mailed my passport renewal forms and old passport yesterday but realized I did not fill in my SSN. It is expedited and I am supposed to travel in 3 weeks. Do I really have to wait for them to mail me a letter so I can mail my SSN back or is there any way to get ahead of the issue by mailing it now somehow?

Answer: Yes, you have to wait. Also, expedited service takes 5 to 7 weeks, excluding shipping. It is very unlikely that you will receive your passport in 3 weeks even without the SSN issue.

We recommend that you call the NPIC at 1-877-487-2778 for an appointment so you can bring your new (correctly completed) form in person to a regional agency and get your passport in 72 hours or less.

Expedited Question
by: Anonymous

Question: I recently had my passport stolen when thieves broke into my rental car and stole my bookbag. I applied for a new passport at a passport acceptance agency. I ordered expedited and 1-2 day shipping, and did enclose a check for the correct amount.

However, I did not see if the lady helping me put an "Expedited" sticker anywhere on my paperwork. Also, I did not write the word "Expedited" anywhere on any envelope, because they package everything for you and send it out after they approve all your documents, meaning I did not touch any envelope per se. After reading previous comments, I don't think this will be a problem.

However, the following may be an issue. I live in Illinois, meaning that normal applications go to the Passport Center in Texas, whereas all Expedited applications should go to Philadelphia. If the lady helping me accidentally sent my application to the Passport Center in Texas instead of where all Expedited applications should go (in Philadelphia), will my Expedited Application be "downgraded/demoted" to a Normal Application because she accidentally sent it to the wrong processing center? I'm sure she meant well but may have not realized that I wanted an Expedited Application or that Expedited Applications go to a different center than where she usually sends them. Any information would be most helpful.

Thanks.

Answer: Your application will be routed to the correct processing center if it ends up in the wrong one.

Check Your Application Status

A status update should be available 2 to 4 weeks after you submitted your application.

Forgot to answer two questions
by: Thea

Question: I got my first passport application submitted 2 weeks ago at USPS with expedited service. The clerk asked me to rewrite the second page of my application since there was an error on the emergency contact. Everything went well and my application is now in process.

I just realized that I forgot to answer two questions: 11 - "Have you ever been married?" and 21 - "Have you ever applied for or been issued a U.S. Passport Book or Passport Card?". Both should have been ticked in the box "No."

Am I expecting to have my application process slow down significantly? Can I call someone to get this fix?

Forgot to Sign
by: Anonymous

Question: I forgot to sign my renewal application, so we got an email from them. Immediately printed new form and signed and overnighted it to the address provided. Called to get an appointment in person but was not available. They received it this morning and we fly out in 10 days. I paid for expedited shipping. Is there a chance I will get to go? How long does it usually take after they receive the corrected form?

Answer: Processing will resume as soon as the document is received. Expedited processing takes 5 to 7 weeks and you also have to take into account some delays due to the missing signature. It is unlikely that you will receive the passport in 10 days.

Wrong form?
by: Bella

Question: I recently got a legal name change and wanted to change it on my passport. My passport was issued in May 2018 and doesn't expire till 2028.

And I submitted form DS-5504 with the passport book and card also legal name change paper by mail and expedite fees of $78.32 as it said at the end of the application. But after a week I think I send in the incorrect form. I think I was supposed to send DS-82 instead! With a higher renewal fee.

Now I'm not sure what's gonna happen since I'm traveling in two and a half months without a passport. Passport forms and fees can be so complicated.

Answer: Yes, you sent the wrong form. You may only use Form DS-5504 for a legal name change within a year of your passport's issuance.

Since it has been 4 years since your passport was issued, you need to send Form DS-82.

The fees ($78.32) you paid are only for expedited processing and 1-2 days delivery. You need to pay the $110 renewal fee in order to get your name changed on your existing passport.

Once your application is received, passport services will contact you regarding the wrong form, with instructions on where to send the right application form and appropriate payment for fees.

Bear in mind that because of the error, there will be delays in the processing of your passport. We recommend that you delay making final travel arrangements until you receive the actual passport.

Wrong birthplace on application
by: Anonymous

Question: Hello. I filled out the DS form and all required information and made an appointment at my local passport office to have a photo taken as well as all my materials sent off and stamped.

I noticed today I put the wrong birthplace for myself on the application form. I am really worried because I need this to participate in school. I’m very worried and don’t know what to do. My ID has a star and can be used for legal identification as well as my original birth certificate and SSN. My passport application is also marked as expedited. If my birthplace is incorrect on the application, will it be rejected or will I have to send in another form at a cost?

Answer: Passport services will reach out to you by email and mail if you need to send a new application form. It will also contain instructions on where to send it. You will have to shoulder mailing costs but there's no need to pay other fees. Keep an eye out for communication from the DOS.

Forgot most recent passport
by: Anonymous

Question: After 16 weeks of submitting my passport renewal application, I received a letter saying I forgot my most recent passport which I just found and realized it still has 6 years left.

Would it be faster to return it or cancel the application? I never reported it lost or missing. Just forgot I had it! I want to travel in 7 wks and am afraid it could take another 16 for a new one.

Answer: Since citizens are not allowed to have multiple passports, existing passports are automatically invalidated once a new/renewal application is received. You cannot cancel your application. You have to send that passport in and proceed with the application.

Passport Renewal
by: Anonymous

Question: Received a letter stating that I did not submit a valid passport and to submit one. I did when I submitted all my documentation for my passport renewal but I think it has expired and since I can't get anyone on the phone to discuss my case I don't know what to do.

I read that I can fill out a form reporting it lost or stolen and pay the fee for a brand new one but I did not lose it.

Any suggestions?

Answer: You cannot report the passport as lost. It will only complicate the application process.

It is possible that the passport was damaged that's why it was deemed invalid. An expired passport is valid for renewal as long as has not been 5 years since issuance.

You need to clarify the issue with passport services. Please call again. Lines are very busy so you may have to try several times before you can get hold of someone.

Outdated passport form?
by: Katherine

Question: I got my photo for my passport renewal taken at a passport & immigration photo center in my city, and the guy there offered to staple my photo on for me. I had already filled out an online version of the DS-82 form but felt I was convenient to just redo it with the photo already attached so I said yes

I was about to mail it yesterday when I realized that the DS-82 form packet he attached my picture to has a creation date of 03/2017, while the form I printed from the us state dept passport website has a date in 2020, so technically the form I was given is outdated. It has identical information boxes and format however, so I’m unsure if it’s really an issue. Would using this form risk my application?

Answer: We recommend submitting the latest version of the application form.

Other names
by: sf

Question: Hello. After sending my packet expedited last week, I noticed I did not fill the "List all other names you have used" nor did I send a marriage license. I am traveling in December and would like to get my passport ASAP. Can I send the info and marriage license somewhere? Thank you for your services!

Answer: The omission of the list of names used in the past might not be an issue but if you applied for a passport name change, you should have sent proof of legal name change. This must be your marriage certificate, not your marriage license.

If there is a missing document or any other problem with your application, you will receive a letter and email from passport services with instructions on how and where to send the missing document/corrected application form.

Passport delivered but have not received in mail
by: Anonymous

Question: I applied May 1st, my status says Approved and should mail by June 14. I called Congress, they said it should already have been delivered but I have nothing in the mail.
They will reach out to Passport Services but I travel in 4 days. Is there anything else I can do on my end?

Answer: It is possible that the passport was lost while in transit. If this is the case you need to file Form DS-86 Statement of Non-Receipt of U.S. Passport within 90 days of the passport's supposed issuance.

You need to contact the NPIC to confirm that your passport was indeed issued. If it was, ask for the issue date and the address of the agency that issued the passport. Also ask if you can schedule an appointment at that agency or the closest agency to you and have your replacement passport issued ASAP.

Forgot to include renewal application forms
by: Anonymous

Question: I mailed my passport, new photo, and check but forgot to put the renewal application form in the envelope. Can I mail in that application for the next day with a note explaining?

Answer: Passport services usually contact applicants with missing documents with instructions on how to send them. In your case, however, they may have issues locating your mailing address since it's the application form that's missing. Even if you mail the form, they may not be able to easily match it with your photo, check, and old passport since they receive thousands of applications on a daily basis.

Please contact the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 to find out what can be done.

Missing signature on renewal form
by: Anonymous

Question: My renewal application wasn’t signed. I overnighted my signature when I received the letter from the passport office notifying me. How long does it take to get my passport after they receive the missing signature? I paid for expedited service. Received letter on week 6, returned letter at beginning of week 7.

Answer: The State Department has recently clarified that processing times do not include mailing times. Expedited service may take up to 12 weeks -- 6 weeks processing and 6 weeks mailing time.

Processing of your passport should begin as soon as the updated form is received. Count 6 weeks from the receipt date and give a couple more for mailing and that is when you should expect your passport to arrive.

Was not 16 when passport was issued
by: Anonymous

Question: I am 22 and sent my passport to be renewed by mail today. I realized you had to be 16 at the time the old passport was issued to renew by mail. I think I was either 16 or maybe 15. I already mailed it. Will they mail it back to me if i was 15 at the time it was issued? I am traveling in February and am worried I was wrong by doing it by mail if i was 15 and won’t get my passport!!

Answer: If your passport was issued when you were 16, it would not yet be expired since it should be valid for 10 years. If it is already expired, it was most likely issued when you were 15 or younger.

Passport services will contact you by email or snail mail regarding the error with instructions on how to resolve the issue. You may also call the NPIC at 1-877-487-2778 to discuss the issue.
