How do I correct wrong birthdate on passport?

by Hanh
(Metuchen, NJ, USA)

Question: What do I need to do if I just realized that the birth year on my passport is incorrect and does not match my American citizenship certificate? At this time I do not need to renew my passport. I plan on flying out of the country in February next year and realized that the year printed on my passport is incorrect.

I provided the office with my American citizen certificate which has the correct birth year when I first applied for the passport. I traveled with it before and had no trouble coming in and out of the country but I am worried that I might one day and don't want to take that chance.

Answer: You can request a passport correction for an incorrect date of birth by submitting form DS-5504 to the address on the form.

You can do this at any time during the validity of the passport with additional cost.

It will be necessary to submit your present passport and evidence of the correct date of birth.

Correction of U.S. passports with printing errors in them are given priority and are usually processed as fast as expedited passport applications.

Along the way, my Certificate of Naturalization shows my birthday as 2/28/1978 and so does my US Passport, although my birthday is 12/28/1978. My parents noticed this problem before but because we had no problems entering and leaving US with my US passport, no one wanted to do anything about it. Now, I feel if I keep this issue as is, I could potentially run into many problems - life insurance policy, property ownership, bank accounts, etc. All of these accounts I've opened throughout my life have been opened with my real birthday of 12/28/1978. Please help!

Answer: Hello, John. You need to contact the USCIS about having the error corrected on your Certificate of Naturalization. Once this is done, you may apply for a passport correction and submit the amended Certificate of Naturalization as proof of the correct data.

Question: I submitted an application for the renewal of my U.S. passport along with a cover letter requesting that my date of birth be changed. I also attached my birth certificate issued by the Philippine government. They told me that I have to correct my date of birth on my certificate of U.S. naturalization before they can process my renewal. I was told by USCIS that they can not correct my date of birth unless the error was made by them. Can I now request to proceed processing my renewal application with my date of birth unchanged?

Answer: You need to fill out passport application forms only with correct information so you cannot apply for a renewal with the incorrect birth date. Please indicate your correct birth date.

If the mistake is just on your U.S. passport, you can submit your naturalization certificate bearing your correct birth date. If the mistake is also on the naturalization certificate, the USCIS should be able to correct it.
