Regarding a minor’s passport by: S. Ray Question: My children are 17 and 16 years old now. Their passports are due to expire in a couple of months. Can I renew by mail because they are over 16 now? Even though the passport we are renewing is a five-year passport? Answer: Since the passports were issued when they were minors, they need to apply for their first adult passports in person. Minors' passports cannot be renewed. At 16 and 17, they can already apply for their passports without a parent present if they already have their own government-issued IDs. Parents no longer need to be present or provide consent but you may still accompany them to show that you are aware of the application. Passports for Minors age 16 and 17
