Submitting an Expired Passport for Renewal
Question: Do I have to submit my most recent passport (will expire in June next year) when I renew or can I submit a prior passport that expired in 1999? I would like to be able to use my current passport until I receive my new one. I have a trip planned to England in June (when my current passport will expire), but I have a trip planned to Italy prior to that.
Also, living in Rochester, NY, I frequently go to Toronto. Therefore, it would be helpful if I could keep my current passport and send in the 1989-1999 passport with my renewal application.
Answer: When
applying for a renewal by mail, you must submit your most recently issued passport. Therefore, you cannot submit the passport that expired in 1999.
You can request expedited service by mail in order to get your passport renewed in 2-3 weeks. There is an additional $60 fee for this service.
If 2-3 weeks is not fast enough, you can apply at the
Buffalo Passport Agency or through a qualified
passport expediting service. Note, you must submit evidence of travel within 2 weeks in order to use this service.
UPDATE:
High demand and mailing delays are impacting how long it takes to get a passport.
- Standard service is currently taking between 7 and 10 weeks.
- Expedited service is currently taking between 3 to 5 weeks.
NOTE: Processing times begin when applications are received at a passport agency or center. Requesting 1-2-day mailing service is recommended.
