Confused by: LaTonya Question: I sent a certified copy of marriage license and received correspondence requesting a copy as if it wasn't submitted with my original application. Answer: Hello, LaTonya. If you sent your marriage LICENSE, it will indeed serve no purpose. A marriage license's sole purpose is to show that you are legally allowed to enter into marriage with your betrothed. The marriage CERTIFICATE, on the other hand, is the one you need to submit in order to show that you have legally entered into marriage and has changed your name because of said marriage. It was the document that you and your spouse signed with the officiant during your marriage rites. The email you received should have instructions on how you can send the right document (original or certified copy of marriage certificate). Processing of your application will resume once the right document is received.
