Passport Services in Boston

There are three different kinds of passport services in Boston. If you need to get a passport in Boston, choose the option below that best fits your needs.

Boston Passport Offices

There are currently less than 10 Boston passport offices. The application acceptance agents that work at US passport offices will receive the completed Form DS-11 and supporting documents from American citizens who want to obtain new passports. Acceptance agents may be a designated municipal or county official, a designated postal employee at an authorized post office, a clerk of a federal or state court of record or a judge or clerk of a probate court accepting applications.

You only apply at a passport office if you want to get a new passport. For other services such as a name change, corrections or a renewal; you should apply by mail. New passport applications are processed in up to 6 weeks for routine service and up to 3 weeks for expedited service. For faster service, see the passport expediting options below.

Boston Passport Agency

The Boston Passport Agency only serves customers who are traveling, or submitting their passports for foreign visas within 14 days or 28 days, respectively. Regional agencies prioritize applicants with emergency travel needs. Applicants are required to schedule an appointment and submit evidence of urgent travel.

Recently, the New York Times published an article about passport processing. Charles Milton's well-planned vacation to England almost didn't happen because he only discovered his passport was missing 3 days before his departure date.

The article stated, "The next morning, three days before the trip, he called the State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs, which issues passports. Mr. Milton soon found himself in a two-hour phone marathon, shuttled to six or seven extensions and, finally, being told that the soonest he could get a passport was 10 business days."

When Mr. Milton told the agent that he didn't have 10 business days to wait, he was informed of an alternative solution: a private passport expediter. If you are in an emergency situation, read on.
