Passport requirements for a minor with only one parent listed on their birth certificate

Question: I am a single parent listed on my child's birth certificate. My child needs to get a passport but it asks for both parents. What can I do or what needs to be done if the other parent isn't around?
Answer: Both parents are required to appear with a minor only if both are listed on the birth certificate and they have shared custody.
Since your name is the only one on the birth certificate, then you can obtain a passport for your child. The birth certificate will serve as evidence of your child's U.S. citizenship and your sole custody of the child.
You can apply at a passport application acceptance facility. Applications are currently being processed in 4-6 weeks for routine service and 2-3 weeks for expedited service.
Florida Passport Offices
If you need to get a passport for your child quicker, you can apply at the Miami Regional Agency or employ the services of a registered passport expediter. Either way, you can obtain the passport as fast as the same day.
