Can an adult passport be applied for a couple of months before turning 16?

Question: My daughter's passport has already expired. She will be turning 16 in November. She has to travel in November. Can I apply for adult passport two to three months before she turns 16, so that she can travel on adult passport in November?

Answer: You, you cannot. If you apply before she turns 16, she will be issued a minor's passport valid for 5 years.
New passport for 16-year-old

Question: My daughter had a child passport which was still valid for 10 months when we decided to apply for an adult passport - I thought the 10 months would have been added to her new passport but they have simply been discarded, is this correct? Or should I get in touch with the passport office?

Answer: The old passport's remaining validity cannot be transferred to the new passport.
Youth turning 16

Question: My son is turning 16 in a few weeks. I want to get his passport done before the rush as we live in PA, one of the states that will require passports for domestic travel. If I do it before his 16th birthday, will I have to renew once he is 16 or will it be valid for 5 years? Or would you recommend waiting because we have no imminent travel plans?

Answer: If you apply for your son's passport before he turns 16, it will be valid for 5 years. This passport cannot be renewed and he will have to apply for a new passport once it expires.

If you wait until it he turns 16, his passport will be valid for 10 years. If you do not have travel plans, we recommend waiting until your son turns 16.
