Name Change with 5 years Before Expiration
by: Mary J

Question: Hello, I'd like to update my passport to my legal married name. I still have 5 years left before my current passport in my maiden name expires. If I submit the name change now with form DS-82, does that also renew my passport expiration date? Will my new passport in my legal married name now expire in 10 years? Wondering if I should renew now or wait until closer to when we start traveling again.

Answer: Hello, Mary. You will be issued a new passport with 10 years validity when you apply for a renewal with name change.

Should you choose not to renew now, please make sure to book tickets in your maiden name to comply with TSA's Secure Flight Program.

Omitting middle name from renewed passport
by: Anonymous

Question: I want to omit my middle name from my passport when I renew. Is it considered a name change?

Answer: No, it is not. You may simply omit your middle name on the form and include a signed explanation why you want it off your new passport.
