Detroit Passport Agency: How to Get Expedited Passport Service at Detroit Passport Processing Center

Front covers of diplomatic, official and no-fee passports.The Detroit Passport Agency expedites passports for U.S. citizens and foreign residents who need to travel within 14 days or within 28 days if they need to get a travel visa. To apply at the Detroit Agency, you first have to make an appointment by calling toll-free at 1-877-487-2778. The line is open 24 hours/day, 7 days a week. Appointments can also be made through the new online appointment system.

If you are not traveling within 14 days you must apply in person at a Passport office.

If you are unable to travel to the Detroit Passport Agency but need to get your passport in a hurry, you can apply online to get a registered expediting service to expedite your passport application in as fast as 24 to 48 hours.

Processing Times

Will call service is offered for life/death emergencies and immediate travel abroad (leaving within 5 business days). Pickup will be based on travel plans. For all other customers, passports will be issued within 5 business days of applying at the agency. You will be informed of how the passport will be sent during your appointment.

Car: From the South, take I-75 N toward Detroit. Take Exit 47A toward M-3/Clark Ave. Stay straight onto Fisher Freeway West. Turn right onto Clark Street. Turn left onto Fort Street West/MI-3. End at 211 West Fort Street, Detroit, MI 48226-3269

From the North, take I-75 S. Merge onto I-375 S/ Chrysler Freeway via Exit 51C on the left toward Civic Center. Take the Madison Ave exit on the left. Take the Madison Street ramp. Turn slight right onto Madison Street. Turn left onto Beaubien Street. Turn right onto Gratiot Ave /MI-3 South. Continue to follow MI-3 South. Turn right onto Monroe Street. Enter next roundabout and take 1st exit onto Woodward Avenue. Pass through 1 roundabout. Turn slight right onto MI-3 S/ Form Street West. End at 211 W Fort St Detroit, MI 48226-3269.

From the West, take I-94 East toward Detroit. Take Exit 215A/M-10 South toward Downtown. Merge onto MI-10 South/John C. Lodge Freeway. Take Exit 1C/Howard Street toward Cobo Roof. Keep left at the fork to go on 5th Street. Turn left onto Fort Street West/MI-3. End at 211 W Fort St Detroit, MI 48226-3269

From the East (United States), take I-90 West toward I-71. Merge onto I-90 West via Exit 170B toward Toledo (Portions toll). Merge onto I-280 North via Exit 71 toward Toledo/ Detroit.

Merge onto I-75 North toward Detroit (Crossing into Michigan).

Take Exit 47A toward M-3/Clark Avenue. Stay straight to go onto Fisher Freeway West. Turn right onto Clark Street. Turn left onto Fort Street West/MI-3. End at 211 W Fort St Detroit, MI 48226-3269

From the East (Canada), take Provincial Route 401 West. Take the Talbot Road exit. Merge onto Provincial Route 3 North (Crossing into the United States, Michigan). Provincial Route 3 North becomes Ambassador Bridge. Turn slight left onto West Fisher Freeway. Merge onto I-75 N toward Detroit. Take Exit 49 toward M-10/ Rosa Parks Blvd/Civic-Cobo Center. Take the exit on the left toward M-10/ Lodge Freeway/Civic Center. Take the M-10 S exit toward Civic Center/Cobo Center. Merge onto MI-10 S/ John C. Lodge Freeway. Airport: From Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) taxis are available (travel time approximately 30 minutes).

Train: From Detroit Station taxis are available (travel time approximately 10 minutes).

Remember, if you are unable to travel to the Detroit Passport Agency, you can contract a private expediting service to provide you with rush passport processing.

What to Do When You Arrive for Your Appointment at the Detroit Passport Agency

  • You will need your Social Security Number or your confirmation number.
  • Please arrive no more than 15 minutes prior to your appointment. Earlier arrivals will not be admitted.
  • Late arrivals, 15 minutes after the scheduled appointment, will have to reschedule their appointments.
  • Upon entry to the building, you will go through security, including metal detectors.
  • Go to check-in/information. Your appointment will be verified.
  • You will be given a numbered ticket with the approximate, current waiting time at the bottom. (We do our best to keep the waiting time as short as possible.)
  • Please take a seat.
  • When your number is called and/or appears on the television monitor, go to the number of the window indicated.
