Which regional agency serves Massachusetts residents?

by Manuel
(Ludlow, MA USA)

Question: I live in Massachusetts. Can I get an expedited renewal of my expired passport at the Connecticut agency, or do I have to go to the Massachusetts agency in Boston, MA?

My daughter and I are taking a cruise on January 6 out of Miami, FL and one of the ports of call is in Mexico. My 16-year-old daughter's passport has expired and we want to renew for the trip. We are flying to Miami (from MA.) on Wednesday, Jan 5th.

Answer: First of all, your daughter may not need a passport for the trip. According to the consular services of the Mexican Embassy to the United States, "U.S. citizens entering Mexico by sea may enter without such documents if they are visiting port towns for a short visit."

There is an exception to the passport rule for passengers of closed-loop cruises which are cruises that begin and end in the same port city. However, you should consult the cruise line concerning required travel documents.

If you need to obtain a new passport for your daughter, then you should call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 to schedule an appointment. You should be able to apply at either the Connecticut agency or the Boston agency.
