Passport issued in 1995. Can I renew or get new one?

by Mark
(Dallas, Georgia)

Question: I had a passport provided when I was with the National Guard and did a tour over in Egypt. The passport according to the website has passed the 15-year window (10 years plus 5 years after expiration). Do I apply for a renewal or apply for a new one?

Also the work I will be performing will be in Algeria, are there any restrictions for that country? Thanks.

Answer: Since your passport was issued more than 15 years ago, you must apply in person for a new passport at an application acceptance facility.

Concerning your destination, American citizens are required to obtain a visa to Algeria prior to departure. Note, the Algerian visa application must be typed in all capital letters. The Algerian Embassy no longer accepts handwritten visa applications.

Algeria Work Visa applicants must submit an employment authorization delivered by the Algerian Ministry of Labor with their visa application. The Embassy of Algeria will not accept any authorization faxed or mailed separately.

The U.S. Department of State has published a general travel warning for the Middle East and North Africa due to the current unrest. You are encouraged to register with the U.S. Embassy in Algeria as soon as possible after your arrival.
