Passport for dual citizen Native American living in Canada.

by Shalimar
(Stoughton, Saskatchewan)

Question: I live in Canada but I was born in the U.S. I am also a native American with dual citizenship under the Jay Treaty. I am wondering what steps I have to take to get a passport from the U.S.?

I also have travel plans coming up in March. I was wondering if it is possible to get a U.S. passport. I have my birth certificate from the States, but all of my IDs are from Saskatchewan. I also still live here in Saskatchewan. I am a treaty Indian as well.

Answer: In order to obtain a U.S. passport in Canada, you must appear in person at a United States consulate. There is one in Winnipeg but they only provide passport services occasionally. For example, a consular officer will be available on March 7th and March 8th to take applications for passports. This is by appointment only.

If that is too late for you, then you can apply at the U.S. Consulate in Calgary. It is also necessary to schedule an appointment. You can do that here.

You will need the following to get a passport:

- Completed, unsigned Form DS-11
- Evidence of U.S. citizenship (original or certified copy of birth certificate)
- Proof of Legal Status in Canada
- Identification (driver's license, student I.D., or Canadian passport)
- One Passport Photo

There is an application fee of US$110 and an execution fee of US$25 for a total of US$135. The process takes about 4 weeks to complete. If you need your passport faster, you can request expedited passport service. There is an additional US$60 fee for this service.

You may pay by:

* Cash in U.S. dollars or the equivalent in Canadian dollars.
* Bank or postal money order, in U.S. dollars only, made payable to U.S. Consulate General or Embassy. Personal checks are not accepted.
* Credit Card
