Will I have enough time to apply and receive a passport with married name before honeymoon?

by Kay

Question: I do not currently have a passport. I am getting married Sept. 26 and leaving on Dec 5 for honeymoon.

I just want to make sure that my passport will match my id, cruise and airline itinerary. Is it best to get one now and change it after getting married or just wait until after wedding?

Answer: There is enough time for you to apply for your passport after you get married. I calculated that there will be approximately 10 weeks between the wedding and the honeymoon. Regular passport processing takes 4-6 weeks.

You may want to consider getting your passport now and changing the name in it after your wedding. The reason being that the State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs plans to increase passport fees soon.

Applying now and requesting a name change after the wedding will save you $25 dollars in fees. Of course, you need to subtract the extra postage fees for the name change request. Depending on how you send the package, you may come out saving very little.

Either way will work. Apply now and request name change later or apply immediately after the wedding.

If you want to apply now, you can read the complete instructions by clicking the link below.
