What to do if I still don't have my passport and I travel in 7 days

Question: I sent in all of my information for a standard renewal in Oregon, have 5 weeks until I travel, and forgot to write 'expedite' on the envelope. As such it is not being routed through "expedited."

I am concerned that I won't get it in time for travel. What can I do at this point? What happens if it gets to 1 week out and I still don't have it? Can I go to the agency in Seattle and get one the same day?

Thanks!

Application: Passport applications are only expedited if you request the service and pay the additional $60 fee.

Your passport still may arrive in time for your trip. You can click the link below to check the status of your application.

Check Passport Application Status

If your passport application has been processed, then you can visit the Seattle Passport Agency and explain the situation to them. The State Department requests that applicants make an appointment by calling 1-877-487-2778.

If you are unable to connect to the automated appointment system or there is no open date before your departure, then you might try appearing at the agency without an appointment. Since you will not have an appointment confirmation number, you need to present your Social Security card. For more information, click the link below.

It's been in process for 5 months now. The flight is in 26 days. What are the chances of actually getting it in time?

Both my daughter’s passports arrived in the 10-13 weeks, I on the other hand have not received mine and we on May 10. When I go check my status it still says in process. Question: Hello! I applied for my passport and it says it has been received on March 21st. However, I have my international trip on June 5th. Will I receive it on time?

9 Weeks Waiting for Passport. Travel in 8 Days
by: Anonymous

Question: I renewed my passport online nine weeks ago. It's still "in process". I paid for expedited service and rush delivery. I have an international flight in 8 days.

I called the Passport office three days ago (11 days before traveling abroad). They would not schedule an appointment. All she could do was send a note to her superiors. If there is less than a week before my travel, can I be guaranteed an appointment? I've spent a lot of time and money arranging this travel. This is beyond frustrating.

Answer: Appointments are extremely limited and you need to call for one.

Paid to expedite. It’s been 8 weeks
by: Anonymous

Question: I paid to expedite and rush delivery my passport 8 weeks ago since today. The website says it’s still processing. I have booked non refundable travel plus hotel accommodations out of the country. I leave the US in 19 days.

During those days I have to travel for work within the US (limits how many days I can schedule for an in person appointment). I’ve tried calling but the automated voice says "heavy call volume". I’ve also tried emailing to no avail. It’s stressful.

Answer: Please keep in mind that processing times exclude the time it takes for the application to arrive at the processing center. This time varies from state to state and which delivery service/courier you used. Also, processing times change; it may have been different at the time you submitted your application. As of this writing, expedited processing takes between 5 and 7 weeks.

You may contact the NPIC 14 days before your departure date to schedule an appointment if your passport does not arrive in the next couple of days.

Help!!

Question: Submitted my husband's passport renewal online on December 4th. We leave for Mexico in 4 days and still, nothing, and the website works rarely. Trying to get help from someone at the agency is a joke, we have called several times a day and get a different story every time. They are truly no help. We check online (when it wants to work) and it says, "still in process" we are on week 13!!! Just a joke!

Answer: Please make sure that you are checking the status at the MyTravelGov website. You may call 1-877-487-2778 on Mondays through Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. ET (closed on federal holidays) for assistance. Please provide your nine-digit application locator number which should start with "95."

Question: I called and the only option was New Orleans. I’m in Atlanta. Is there any way to get an appointment in Atlanta to make my trip without having to pay $900 to FedEx "rush my passport" program?

Answer: If the appointment agent says the only available slot is in New Orleans, there is nothing that can be done to open a slot in Atlanta. Just keep calling in case an appointment opens in a closer agency.

Passport Card
by: RJ

Question: I sent my passport book in to get a passport card issued. It was received on Aug. 16. I paid for expedited service. I'm travelling on Oct. 6th. I'm not concerned about the card. I'm concerned about getting my passport book back in time for the trip. How quickly can I expect the passport book to be returned? Can I pay for 1-2 day service on just the passport book and let the card come through the regular mail?

Answer: Supporting documents (which your passport book is) are sent back via regular mail without tracking. It would be mailed around 4 weeks after the passport card is issued. You cannot pay for 1-2 days delivery for supporting documents.

Question: My application was received on July 11th, I then get a letter on 9/5 that I need to send a new copy of my birth certificate. I sent it the very next day(9/6). Will I still get my passport on time by Oct 17? or do I need to expedite it since they did receive it on July 11?

Answer: You should expect delays in the processing because of the document you needed to resend. You may have to expedite to better your chances of receiving your passport before your scheduled trip.

Question: I applied for my passport on Aug. 15th and they received it on Aug. 19th it's been 2 weeks and it's still processing. I expedited it as well. How long should I wait before, applying for an appt at a regional center? My travel date is Oct. 2.

Answer: Expedited service takes 5 to 7 weeks to complete, counted from the time the application is received at the processing center. Five weeks from August 19 is September 23 and seven weeks from the aforementioned date is October 7. You should expect the passport to arrive between/around these dates if you paid for 1 to 2 days delivery as well.

You may start scheduling an appointment at a regional agency 2 weeks before your scheduled departure.

Expediate Passport Renewal
by: Kristen

Question: I'm sending my renewal application and paying for the expedited service. I travel in 6 weeks. If I don't get it in two weeks, can I schedule an in-person appointment even if I've mailed my existing passport?

Answer: Expedited service by mail takes about 5 to 7 weeks excluding shipping. It is highly unlikely that you will get the passport in 2 weeks. If you get an appointment, there will be no need to resubmit your requirements since they're already in the system once received at the processing center. Please call 1-877-487-2778 two weeks before your scheduled departure.

Eight Weeks Since Application was Submitted, Status Still "Not Available"
by: Anonymous

Question: I submitted my expedited passport application at a post office in Oregon on 6/14, in preparation for international travel on 8/16. It has now been nearly eight weeks since submitting my application, and my passport application status still shows "Not Available". I have called the passport office multiple times, and while they were able to give me my application number, they had no additional information about what stage my application was in the overall process.

I have not received any communications in the mail requesting additional information for my application. I paid for the application and expedited service with cash, so there shouldn't be an issue with processing my payment. I have tried to book an in-person appointment since my international travel is less than two weeks out, but there are no openings at any of the U.S. passport agencies between now and when I'm scheduled to depart the country.

When can I expect to see an update on the status of my passport application, and is there a refund for the expedited service if my passport does not arrive within the expected time frame (5-7 weeks + up to 2 weeks for delivery of application)?

Answer: We are a private company and do not have access to the information you require. As for the refund, yes, you may request for a refund of the expedite fee.

Question: I still see Passport Application status as Not Available after 6 weeks of submitting my application for a new passport. What should I do?

Answer: There is nothing else to do but try for an in-person appointment. Please call 1-877-487-2778.

Expited but not received for trip

Question: I plan to just go to the local passport office and arrive without an appointment as there are no available appointments nationwide. Do I have to bring another passport photo? I sent both by mail with the expedited request.

Answer: A local passport office cannot expedite passport issuance. These places only serve as acceptance facilities for new applications.

In order to get a passport issued expeditiously, you need to go to a regional passport agency. These places strictly require an appointment and arriving without one will just result in you getting turned away. Please call 1-877-487-2778 to secure an appointment.

To answer your question regarding a new passport photo -- no, there is no need for one if you already submitted your application.

Haven’t booked yet due to passports

Question: My family applied for passports 6/1. We are planning a European cruise on 8/14. I calculated 11 weeks from 6/1 to be 8/10. We were unaware that they wouldn’t start processing for 2 weeks. On 7/18 I got an email saying that they received my application. When can I realistically expect to see our passports?

Answer: Hi, Kevin. The 8 to 11 weeks do not include the time it takes for an application to arrive at a processing center and then at your mailing address once the passport is issued.

We cannot assume how long it will actually take to process your applications. If we base it on the email you received stating the applications were received on 7/18, you will have the passports around the second week of September at the earliest if you paid for 1-2 days delivery. If you meant 6/18, then your passports should arrive around the second week of August if again, you paid the $18.32 delivery fee.

Also, please note that mailing times vary across the country.

Appointments

Question: I have a flight on 7/25 and I sent in my passport for expedited processing (received on 6/8). I called the passport agency phone number as stated in many of the answers to these questions (also listed on the passport status website) but according to the agents answering the calls, there are no appointments available (and there won't be for a while).

The ironic part is that my passport wasn't even expired when I sent it in. I only sent it because of the 6-month rule in Europe. I would have rather taken my chances with that.

Now my trip likely won't happen and I have no idea where my passport is and nobody will tell me anything.

Is there anything at all anybody else can do?

Answer: Private companies can no longer provide assistance once an application is submitted. Some applicants have sought help from their local congressmen to get their passports in time. While we cannot guarantee favorable results, you may want to try this one as well.

Expedite?
by: Anonymous

Question: I called 877-487-2778 to expedite my passport issuance, the first available appointment date they had was 2 days after my flight date! Expedite?

Answer: Appointments are extremely limited but cancellations happen from time to time. We recommend calling again in case a slot opens up before your flight date.

Tickets paid, expedited passport no update

Question: Hi. I applied for my daughter's passport on June 14th. Our travel date is set for July 31st. The status is showing as processing. Would we be able to make the flight?

I’m willing to pay the additional cost for the 1 -2 day delivery. The 877 number don’t even bother to call. No one’s is ever there to guide you. Please help.

Answer: You need to call 1-877-487-2778 to possibly pay the 1 to 2 days delivery fee. Please note, however, that expedited service takes 5 to 7 weeks excluding the time it takes for the application to arrive at the processing center and for the passport to arrive at your door.

While there is a chance that the passport will arrive before your flight, there are no guarantees. We recommend that you contact the NPIc (same 877 number) for an appointment at a regional passport agency so you can have the passport issued in person before your trip.

Question: I applied for my passport on June 22. My flight is on July 28 and did the routine. Also, checked my status, and says "not available" will I get it in time or can I go to an agency to get it sooner?

Answer: Routine processing takes 8 to 11 weeks excluding shipping times. It is very unlikely that your passport will arrive in time for your scheduled departure.

Question: My flight is 7/20/22 and I got my passport done on 6/6/22. We paid extra for it to come faster but it still isn’t here. When would it come? I'm really worried.

Answer: Expedited service takes 5 to 7 weeks to process, excluding shipping times on the front and back end. If you applied on June 6th, you should expect the passport to arrive around the first week of August, if you take shipping times into account.

Please contact the NPIC at 1-877-487-2778 for an appointment at a regional agency. At this time, only an agency can issue your passport before your scheduled trip.

Question: My expedited application was received on June 23rd, and I'm traveling to Sweden on July 20th. If I do not receive my expedited US passport in time, can I travel on my Swedish passport to Sweden and back to the US again after two weeks?

Answer: As a U.S. citizen, you need to depart and re-enter the United States using a valid American passport. You may use your Swedish passport to enter and exit Sweden.

Question: I have an appointment on June 23 to get a new passport since mine expired. I am located in the US. My flight is not till August 6 it is not an international flight. I do not have a license though just a regular ID and I am worried I can’t board the flight. Is it worth expediting and do you believe I can receive it in time?

Real ID enforcement for domestic travel has been extended until May 3, 2023. You may still travel domestically with a regular ID that matches your tickets.

Question: My flight is on June 22nd and I've been trying to get an appointment for the past 3 weeks.

I've been calling the nearest agency every day and there's never an appointment available. My flight is around the corner and I still haven't got an appointment yet. I know that walk-ins are not available at the moment but should I still give it a shot?

If not, what are the other options that can help me get my passport before June 22nd?

Answer: Walk-ins are not entertained. Unfortunately, there is no other way to get your passport in time. Some have tried to seek assistance from their congressmen but there's nop guarantee it will also work to your advantage.

Status showing in the approved, NPIC said it was already delivered.

Question: I went to the USPS on April 5th to apply for a new Passport. I called the NPIC yesterday and they said the passport was delivered to me on the 26th of April. JUST around 2 weeks from my submission? That is concerningly fast.

I never actually got the mail, but I did receive my old passport around that time.

My online status is showing that I'm on the "Approved" stage and has not been mailed out. So now I'm confused??

What should I do, I have my flight on the 7th of June. And I'm not sure if I should wait or file a claim for a loss or something.

Answer: Please contact the NPIC again and ask to speak to a supervisor. Such a person should be able to provide you with better (and non-contradicting) information.

Renewal passport delivered
by: Anonymous

Question: My passport was sent in for renewal on April 13th. It is now May 31 and it is still showing NOT AVAILABLE after almost 7 weeks. They have not cashed the check either. Already tried calling the number and they informed me it may have gotten LOST even though I have the tracking number to say it was delivered along with a signature.

They also said I should just apply for a new one since I no longer have possession of the old passport to renew it with. How is it even fair to make citizens pay more money to start the process over (since I now have to get Original documents again) when it clearly got delivered??

Answer: If tracking shows it was delivered, the application should already be in at least the first stages of processing. Please contact the NPIC again and ask to speak to a supervisor. He/she may be able to provide you with better answers and recommendations.

Will my passport arrive on time before my flight??

Question: I went to the USPS to get a new passport on 4/05/22 and my flight is on 6/07/22. I paid for expedited shipping but it is now May 28 and it is not here. Will I still get it in time?

Answer: Expedited service takes 5 to 7 weeks excluding the time it took for the application to arrive at the processing and the time it will take for the passport to arrive at your doorstep. It is possible that the passport is already in the final stages or already on its way to you. There is no guarantee that it will arrive before your departure date but it is possible.

Will I recieve it in time
by: Anonymous

Question: Tomorrow will be May 27th. That’s when I go through the whole passport process. My trip is on July 8th. I'm going to do expedited services but I’m scared it will not come on time. Will it?

Answer: It is unlikely. You only have 6 weeks between May 27th and July 8th. The 5 to 7 weeks processing time for expedited service does not include mailing times to and from the processing center.

You have two options:

1. You can apply through a private passport courier who can assist you from preparation, and submission until issuance. Our trusted service, Rush My Passport can get your passport in 5 weeks or less.

Get Passport Fast

2. You can schedule an in-person appointment at a regional passport agency 2 weeks before July 8th. Appointments are available through the NPIC's hotline 1-877-487-2778. The date of your appointment must be within 5 days of your departure. Appointments are extremely limited and you may have to call several times over several days before you can secure one.

Question: My dad's passport isn’t here yet and we have a flight for London on May 25 at 10 pm. It’s a family emergency and the situation is just getting worse. We called the passport office but we have not found a solution yet. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Answer: Please call 1-877-487-2778 8 AM to 5PM or 202-647-4000 after hours to secure an appointment at a regional agency. An agency should be able to issue the passport in 24 hours or less.

Passport photo lost?
by: Anonymous

Question: I submitted everything for my passport including a photo. I even took it at the post office so it'd be easier. A couple of weeks later I get a letter in the mail saying I didn't submit a photo. I'm guessing it was lost but that's not my fault. I paid for expedited but will now be missing my trip because of this, would I be able to be refunded and would I have to pay for another photo at the post office?

Answer: If your application is not processed via expedited service, you will be given a refund for the said service ($60). The processing period will now include the time it will take for them to receive your new photo. However, the Department of State does not compensate for missed trips and you will need to pay for a new passport photo.

Application In Process Need Passport
by: Anonymous

Question: I submitted an application for a passport on April 4. I'm due to travel on May 18th. The application only shows In Process. I have called and tried to get an appointment at an Agency, but no appointments are available. I am worried I will not be able to travel and therefore lose my ticket.

It is quickly approaching a week and a half before my departure. Can someone please help?

Answer: Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done by a private company/courier since the application has already been submitted.

The only way you can get your passport issued ASAP is to secure an appointment at a regional agency. There may be cancellations and you might get that slot if you continue calling the NPIC. Some applicants have also reported getting assistance from their local congressmen's office. You may want to try that avenue as well.

Flight in 2 days still no passport
by: Anonymous

Question: I applied for a passport book because I already had the card on 4/15/22. When I check my status it says processing. I paid for expedited and had to go through my congressmen to receive it within 2 weeks. My flight is May 6. And I call and nobody can help. They just said I need to wait. Then I was told by a congressman that the agency will reach out to me directly. I still have not received a call.

Answer: Expedited processing takes 5 to 7 weeks. This does not include mailing times. Your application is still on track based on this timeline. What you can do now is call 1-877-487-2778 to schedule an appointment at an agency and get your passport issued on the same day. You may seek the congressman's help to get an appointment if you cannot get one by calling.

My passport status still shows "not available" after 2 months?
by: Anonymous

Question: I applied for a new passport (first time) in February with Form DS-11.
It is now a little bit more than 2 weeks before my travel date (I have a flight on May 7th), but the status still shows "not available".

What is going on? Will the passport arrive before the 7th? Can I make an in-person appointment on the 25th (2 weeks before) and start a new application?

Thank you.

Answer: It is possible that there are documents missing in your application. If this is the case, you should have received a letter from the Department of State containing instructions on how and where to send the documents.

You may contact the NPIC at 1-877-487-2778 to verify this and to schedule an appointment. If your application was received, there will be no need to submit the documents you already sent in.

Will I get my passport on time?
by: Marie

Question: I booked an appointment to apply for my passport along with my brother and sister (minors) on 05/03. We are traveling 12 weeks out from that day. Will we be able to get our passports on time? Can we Expedite it if we pay the fee?

Our travel date is set for 07/27; whereas 8-11 weeks for regular processing time puts us at 06/29-07/20. Would that be enough time to receive everything back without paying for the expedited fees? We are paying the $18.32 for the 1-2 Delivery option so just hoping processing doesn't take too long. Please help, thank you.

Answer: Processing times are just approximations. The passports may or may not arrive within the said dates. If you want to ensure that you get the passports in time, we recommend requesting expedited service.

Will My Son's Passport Arrive in Time for our Flight?
by: Anonymous

Question: The Department of State received the application for my son's (8 years old) passport on February 17. We expedited the application and are scheduled to fly to England on April 9. Is it likely that I will receive his passport in time? Thanks.

Answer: Expedited processing takes 5 to 7 weeks from the time the application is received to the day it is issued. If we base the processing period on February 17, the passport should be issued by April 7. If you paid for 1-2 days delivery, it should arrive just in the nick of time.

Having said this, the passport might arrive before the 7th week.

Cancelled passport appointment are not bookable
by: Anonymous

Question: Hi. I am trying to find an appointment for my son's passport. I woke up at 4:00 AM upon a post office agent's advice and tried to book canceled appointments.

Although I see many slots available, I was not able to book any slot lesser than 4 weeks away. Could you please advise on how to book a last-minute canceled slot that is showing on the available time slots?

Answer: It may just be a glitch on the website and the slots may not actually be available. It's almost peak travel season so it is more likely that appointments are all booked up weeks ahead.

Question: I'm applying for our passports on 2/11. Will I receive them in time for a departure date of 4/5?

Answer: Expedited service currently takes 5 to 7 weeks, excluding shipping on the front and back end. Seven weeks from today (2/11) is the last week of March. This does not include the time it will take for your applications to arrive at the processing center. We recommend paying for 1-2 days delivery ($18.32) of the passports once they are issued.

There is a chance that you will get the passports before your trip but guarantees cannot be made. We suggest you wait until your passports arrive before making any final travel arrangements.

Letter from the Department of State

Question: I recently applied for a U.S Passport and it says they received it on 9/9/21 with Expedient Service. I finally received a letter in the mail asking for more verification documents.

Most of the documents that are requested for my father's physical presence in the U.S Territories we were unable to retrieve. My first application on 6/9/2016 also requested more information from the Honolulu Agency, it was denied because I wasn't able to send them all in on time. But I still have the documents they requested, but this recent application is with another passport agency. Now they are asking for documents that I know it doesn't exist. What should I do?

Answer: Please contact the NPIC at 1-877-487-2778 to find out if there are any other documents you can submit in the place of those you cannot acquire.

Question: I sent in my application back in November and they received it on November 11th. I paid for expedited and it shows that when I look online.

It is Jan 19th and I still haven't received my passport or any information about why. I have tried to call the 877 number and they told me the same thing I already knew.

There are no appointments before the day I am traveling. This may be one of the last trips I can take with my mother and I might not be able to go because of this. Any suggestions?

Answer: Since it has been over 7 weeks since your application was received, passport services may have sent you a request for more documents. They cannot continue processing your application unless you respond to this letter. Please double-check your mail and email (including your spam folder) for any communication from the U.S. Department of State.

If this is not the case, your only option is to keep trying to book an appointment. Cancellations do happen and you might chance on that slot.

Answer: It may take about 2 weeks for a status update to be available on the tracking system. It might take longer depending on how long it takes for the application to reach the processing center. We recommend checking again in a couple of days.

Answer: Routine service takes 8 to 11 weeks so counting from 12/24, processing should be completed by 3/11. The passport may take several days to arrive. If you requested and paid for expedited service, the passport should be issued by 2/11 at the latest. Expedited service takes 5 to 7 weeks.

Question: I applied for an expedited passport. It will be 5 weeks this Friday and my flight is on Dec 27. I called the national passport line and they told me they do not have any available dates before Dec 27. Then I contacted the congressman for the district that I live in, and the congressman's office helped me to get an appointment in a couple of hours for December 21. However, my concern is, I already submitted the original naturalization certificate as proof of my citizenship and now if I go to my appt, I'm not even sure if they going to accept the copy of it.

Answer: You do not need to resubmit your requirements. If your application is in process, your documents should already be in the system. All you need are your proof of immediate international travel and appointment confirmation number.

Question: I already paid for expedited service and they pass their due on 12/07 and my boy's passport remains in process. Question: Hi. I have checked my passport renewal status and it says that they have received my passport on Nov. 9th. However, I have a flight scheduled for Dec. 20th. Do you think my passport will be able to arrive before Dec. 20th?

Seven weeks from November 9th is the last week of December. While there is a possibility that your passport will arrive within 5 weeks instead of 7, guarantees cannot be made.

Question: I paid for an expedited passport for my infant it’s been now 5 weeks and still have not gotten updates. We’re leaving for travel in a week. They sent me an email stating they need additional forms which I sent overnight they received it but still status says processing. How long would it take to open my letter? Thanks in advance.

Answer: Expedited service takes 5 to 7 weeks excluding the time it takes for the application to arrive at the processing center and for the new passport to be mailed to your address. Since you needed to submit additional documents, there may be a slight delay but your application should still be expedited.

Please contact the NPIC at 1-877-487-2778 for more information.

Answer: It takes more or less 4 weeks for your passport to appear as in process in the status tracker. Expedited service currently takes 5 to 7 weeks. Seven weeks from November 8 is the last week of December. Giving a couple of weeks for mailing, your passport should likely still arrive before February.

Question: I applied at a post office for my passport back in early July. I paid the extra money for expedited and the faster mailing. They received my documentation on 7/9/2021. However, a month later I received a letter saying that the person who processed it wasn't approved to do so and I would have to send in some of the information again with someone who is approved to accept it. I went to a local government building and had someone send in the documentation that was requested. That was received on 8/27/2021 but when I check the website it says it was submitted using routine service, not expedited. So now I am afraid that my application will not be expedited - through no fault of mine. I can't get anyone on the phone who can help me and give me any information. Any ideas?

Answer: We're not a government agency so we cannot provide you with any information specific to your application. Please contact the NPIC at 1-877-487-2778 again and ask to speak to a supervisor who has more clearance than frontline customer service agents.

I have an international trip coming up in 12 days and I therefore called and made an appointment at a passport agency. I still don’t have them back as my application is still processing? Do l bring the child with me to the appointment as he is a minor?

Question: I sent my passport 7/27, they received it 8/11. A week later, I request and paid for expedited and they got the payment.

Two weeks ago they sent me a letter stating they needed my divorce decree and my new marriage license to change my last name to my maiden name. My divorce decree doesn’t say anything about last name change. I changed my name because I was married-not by law. Now I want to go back to my maiden name. I sent those documents overnight they got them the next day. My trip is on 11/14 and the status still says in process. Will I be able to get my passport on time?

Answer: Since the documents you initially submitted and additional paperwork were required, you should expect some delays. Exactly how long the delay will be is uncertain. It could be a few days or a few weeks.

The best-case scenario is that your application will be processed within 20 days after receipt of the additional documents. If this were the case, you should have your passport before your scheduled departure.

Question: I applied for my passport on 08/19. I got routine service and I received a card in the mail to verify my identity to send in 5 forms. I sent them and they were delivered on the 30th how long will it take for them to deliver my passport?

Please note that processing times change without prior notice and delivery may be signifantly delayed due to ongoing issues with USPS.

Need passport by November 24th
by: Anonymous

Question: I need to get a new passport for my 18yr old - didn’t know the rules changed - where can I get one for our November trip that is 7 weeks away?

Answer: The only place that can issue a passport in less than 12 weeks is a regional passport agency. At present, regional agencies are prioritizing customers who are traveling internationally in the next 72 hours (3 business days) due to a qualified life-or-death emergency. Some agencies offer limited appointments for customers who have urgent international travel in the next 72 hours (3 business days) for reasons other than a life-or-death emergency.

You may start calling 1-877-487-2778 two weeks before your trip but the appointment date must be within 3 business days of your departure date. Agents are available 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. ET, Mondays through Fridays. Lines may be very busy so you have to try several times before you can reach someone.

Passport still saying unavailable
by: Anonymous

Question: Hello, me and my boyfriend both applied on the same day, June 25th. They told us that the passport will only take 8 weeks. I received my passport, however when we go to the website, his still says status unavailable, and it has been 12 weeks already.

We can't get any information and we travel on Oct 11th, I suppose the last thing to do is to try and get an appointment, but why is it still says status unavailable? I thought it only took 4 weeks for them to receive the information? We went through the post office.

Answer: At the time you submitted your application, processing only took 12 weeks for standard and 6 weeks for expedited service. Processing times changed in July, adding six weeks because of issues with USPS.

Having said that, it usually does not take this long for an application to appear as in-process unless there are missing documents.

We recommend that you contact the NPIC at 1-877-487-2778 to inquire about the delay in the processing.

Question: I sent in my passport renewal in June and have a trip scheduled for Nov. 27th. My status says in-process and says they received everything July 14th (the check for renewal was cashed a few days before that).

Will I get my passport in time? Can I apply in person somewhere if the time is getting close to departure?

Answer: Assuming you applied in early June, your passport should arrive by the first week of October. If it does not arrive, you may schedule an in-person appointment at a regional agency 3 days before your trip. You need to call 1-877-487-2778 to setup an appointment.

Question: I signed up for a new passport 6/25 and I travel 10/4. The USPS worker told me I wouldn't need to expedite it so I elected not too. It's 9/21 and I still haven't received it. I signed up to try to upgrade to expedited 3 weeks ago but it still is in process. Is there any chance of me getting before 10/4?

Answer: Processing times change depending on COVID-related conditions. At the time you applied, regular service only took more or less 12 weeks hence the advice of the passport agent.

Things changed in July due to issues with USPS -- mailing can now take up to 6 weeks on the front and back end. That is why regular service now takes up to 18 weeks. Based on the date you submitted your application, you should expect your passport to arrive by the last week of October.

The Department of State's commitment is to process expedited requests within 20 days upon receipt thereof. Assuming your request was approved and your payment has been debited from your account 3 weeks ago, your passport should arrive soon.

These projections are based on information provided in the Department of State's website. We cannot provide any guarantees that your passport will arrive before your travel date.

Question: I looked about my baby's passport on 09/10. I have a flight on 10/16. I paid for expedited service including the 1-2 day delivery. I am only here on a visitor visa and I don’t wanna go over my 6 months. Will I get it in time to travel?

Answer: If by "looked about", you meant that you applied for your baby's passport on 9/10, it will not arrive by your travel date. Expedited service may take up to 12 weeks to complete. That means the passport will arrive by the last week of November. Based on this, you should start the process of applying for an extension to your visa to avoid issues with immigration (ICE).

Question: Hello. I submitted my application for a new passport on 6/8 and my friend submitted her passport 6/11 (we both did not expedite). She received her passport 3 weeks ago, and my passport is still in process. I leave on October 11th, should I be concerned that I will not receive my passport?

Answer: Hello! Standard service can take up to 18 weeks. Passports may arrive long before, on, or shortly after the 18th week -- it depends on the volume of applications being processed at the processing center, among other factors.

Answer: Hello. Expedited service can take up to 12 weeks. Twelve weeks from 7/12 is 10/4. Considering that additional documents were required, you should expect delays. We cannot tell you for sure if your documents will arrive or not since we do not have access to the government's data.

My sons passport
by: Donnaree

Question: I applied for my son’s passport on July 2, the application was received on July 7. On August 11, I receive an email that I was to submit additional paperwork. It was sent and received on August 22.

I had applied for expedited service and 2 days return mailing. It's been here since April and I have to leave before October and I need a visa for travel.

I expect to receive my passport back on September 28 based on the time my application was received. I’m a nervous wreck as I need to leave on the last day of September. Can you give me any advice? I’m so frustrated; the only thing I’m seeing is that my application is in process. I am stressed out.

Answer: Based on your submission date, your passport should arrive in the third week of September. If it does not arrive by September 24, you can call 1-877-487-2778 to schedule an appointment at the closest regional agency three business days before your trip. Question: Hi, how long will it take for them to let me know if my passport has been denied. My husband paid for expedited passport renewal and it's been 6 wks and still says processing. Thank you.

Applied in March
by: Anonymous

Question: I applied for my passport in March and still have not received anything. I have spoken with a few representatives from the agency and no one has been able to give me a clear answer.

I have not received any notifications, birth certificate, nothing. I asked to speak to a manager and the guy that came on and claimed to be the manager placed me on hold, then hung up. My trip is planned for September 1st and still no answer. Can someone please direct me in the right place to obtain my passport?

Answer: Since you applied in March, you should already have received your passport. While we cannot tell you for certain what happened to your application, it is possible that there were missing documents that's why it was not processed. It is also possible that it was processed but your new passport was lost in the mail. Whichever the case, the only people who can give you a fact-based answer are those working for the Department of State. You may reach by phone (which you have already tried) or by email at NPIC@state.gov.

Travel in November

Question: Does the 18 weeks start when you mail your passport application at the post office? Or does it start when they submit your application at the passport center?

I mailed my passport application at the post office on May 19th, the passport agency received my passport application/passport book on June 24th but I need my passport back before October because I have to get a Visa. I'm going to another country. I expedited my application later but it probably won't go through since I messed it up. Will I have my passport back before October?

Answer: Hello, Kayla. The 18-week turnaround time is from the day you mailed in the application to the day you receive the new passport. Standard processing time includes 12 weeks processing and an additional 6 weeks of mailing, hence the 18 weeks.

We cannot guarantee that you will receive your passport before October. Since you mailed your application on May 19th, you should expect the passport to arrive by the 3rd week of September, provided there are no delays in the mailing.

by: Michelle

Question: Hello, my passport application was received on 6/3 (change from card to book). I just received an email on 8/1 that it is "in process". Do those 8 weeks June-August count as part of the 12-week processing time? I travel in October and at the time I sent it in, that should have it arrive end of September. If those initial weeks don't count, how can I get it sooner?? Did not pay for expedited as I should have had it.

Answer: Hi, Michelle. Standard service may take up to 18 weeks counting from the day you submitted your application to the day you receive your passport. Since you submitted on 6/3, you should receive your passport on the first week of October provided there are no courier delays.

If you do not receive your passport days before your trip, you may try to schedule an appointment at a regional agency by calling 1-877-487-2778. Regional agencies cater to individuals who need to travel urgently and those who are traveling due to a life-or-death emergency. They can issue passports in 72 hours or less.

I am going to travel to Mexico in 3 weeks and I know that even if I expedite a passport I won't get it in time... Our flights and hotel are already paid for... Is it a possibility to get a temporary passport or something of the sort?

Passport for minor being processed but not received
by: Anonymous

Question: Hello, my husband and I are looking to get a passport for our baby in time for travel on 8/16.
My husband, baby, and I went in person to USPS and applied and paid the $60 expedited fee as well as the expedited mailing fee of $17.56. I checked the status and it’s in "process"

Since we didn’t know if we’d get the passport in time my Husband made an Appointment in San Diego 8/13. (We live in San Francisco.) Trying to get clarity. Who needs to attend this appointment? Since the three of us already applied in person, do the three of us have to fly to San Diego? Email confirmation says only 1 number of attendees. Or can either my husband or I attend?

DS-11 form filled out. And the application is being processed already. Seems redundant that we’d all have to attend in person a 2nd time.

Could someone please explain the process we should follow in San Diego?

Answer: Only one person needs to appear at the regional passport agency. The child does not need to be present anymore. There will be no need to re-submit the requirements but proof of travel in the child's name must be presented during the appointment.

Help! Traveling next week Tuesday!
by: Ingrid

Question: We’re traveling next week and still have not received my daughter's passport. When I applied for hers, the time frame for expedited shipping was still 4-6 weeks which is what the lady at the post office said!

I applied for her passport on July 6th and they received it on July 9th and not when I check status is says "not available" which is so annoying!

Her passport has not arrived, what can I do? The post office took and mailed her original copy of her birth certificate along with her application and now I don’t know what my options are???

Can I still go get one at the agency without her documents if they were mailed with her application?

Answer: Hello, Ingrid. It takes about 6 weeks for an application to appear as processing in the tracking system.

You can call 1-877-487-2778 for an appointment at a regional agency. If the application has been received, passport services will have the requirements on file and they will issue your daughter's passport in 72 hours or less.

about 1-2 weeks out from my trip without it? And do I call to report it lost before I apply for a new one?

Frustrated, Waiting on infant passports over 12 weeks now
by: Anonymous

Question: I applied for my twin infants' passports 13 weeks ago. At that time we were told 8 weeks to process and no need to pay to expedite. Now we leave in 2 weeks. Tried calling the 877# but no one answers. Also, unable to book an online appt at the nearest passport facility. I'm extremely frustrated and can't seem to get any answers or help.

Answer: The Department of State has temporarily disabled the online appointment booking system. You need to call 1-877-487-2778 to schedule an appointment.

Since a lot of people are calling for various reasons and there is only one number to contact passport services, lines are expectedly busy and some calls may be disconnected. Just keep trying so you can have your child's passport issued in time for your trip.

How to switch

Question: I applied for my daughter to renew her passport on 04/28 at the post office near me in NJ. I had a plan to travel on 08/22 and when we applied we were told that we do not need to apply for expedited service since it is too early. I was told that I would receive the passport by 07/15.

Now I see on the status that her application still is in process, however, it says the U.S department of state has received her application for your passport book on 06/10/2021. I tried to change the service from regular to expedited. I was told by a representative that I have to reply to an email with an extra charge.

However, "The passport agency will do its best to accommodate my request but cannot guarantee it". What shall I do now??

Answer: Your only other option is to schedule an appointment at a regional passport agency 2 weeks before your scheduled departure. Appointments can only be booked by calling 1-877-487-2778. Agents are available Mondays through Fridays from 8AM to 10PM Eastern time.

Passports

Question: I applied for my two minor children's passports on May 6 at the post office, they were sent out on May 7, the checks were not cashed until June 16.

When we applied, standard wait times were 12 weeks. However, it has now been 11 weeks and the status on BOTH applications still says unavailable. Our travel plans are for mid-August and I am freaking out. Why is there no update to the status? I have already tried calling and that was a total waste of time. PLEASE help!

Answer: We are not a government agency so we cannot provide you with a definitive answer as to why the applications are still not showing up in the tracking system.

It is possible that there are missing requirements and passport services is waiting for you to send them for the applications to proceed. Please check your mail and email inbox for any communication from the Department of State.

You may try and contact the NPIC at 1-877-487-2778. Calling before or at opening hour (8AM) may give you a better chance of getting someone to answer your inquiries. If you are not satisfied with the agent's answers, ask to speak to a supervisor.

Passport not arriving on time
by: Anonymous

Question: I have applied for a passport renewal in May and have not received my passport yet. I am traveling to Canada by car on Aug 13. They closed the online appointment system. I tried calling them and can't get through their automated system to talk to someone so I can make an appointment with the regional office. Any advice will help.

Answer: Your time is better spent trying to schedule an appointment online than waiting for someone to speak to on the phone. Agents do not have access to an alternate reservation system -- what you see online is also what is available to them.

You can try going online for an appointment at 11PM onwards. Some have said this is when slots open. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to get an appointment but it's worth a try.

Travel date July 29 - help please
by: Danielle

Question: Hi, here is my timeline.
6/11 - Expedited passport renewal with a name change at the Post Office.
6/16 - Online Status In Process and received.
7/16 - Received a letter from the Dept. of State (dated 6/10) that I did not include a Certified Copy of my marriage certificate with my application.
7/19 - Overnighted my Certified Copy of marriage certificate to address provided in the letter.
7/22 (today) - I have not heard anything and my flight is in 7 days.

Will my passport arrive in time? I was on hold for four hours and the agent who answered was no help.
Did the marriage certificate hold-up ruin my expedited timeframe or will they try to honor my request to expedite and travel dates? I can't get an appointment either.

Answer: A slight delay is to be expected since there was a missing requirement. We cannot tell you how much longer it will take since we do not have access to the government's data.

The only way you can ensure that you get your passport before your trip is by going to a regional agency. You need to schedule an appointment for no sooner than 3 business days before your trip. Appointments are very limited but some have shared that they were able to easily get one between 11PM and 3AM.

Applied for DS 86
by: Anonymous

Question: I had applied for an expedited passport which was sent back to a passport agency in Virginia. My mailing address was invalid.

I have an international trip coming up on August 4. I submitted DS 68 today. Does anyone know if my passport will be reissued or old re-sent.

Since my timelines are less than 2 weeks, do you know if my passport will come on time? When I try to schedule online appointments, I don’t see any availability. Am I missing something? Appreciate any information. Tracking an application with call center is painful.

Answer: The Department of State has not published processing times for passport reissues through DS-86. We cannot tell you if your passport will arrive in time for your trip.

Appointments are limited at this time but some slots do open up. Some users say it's easier to schedule an appointment between 11PM and 3AM.

Question: I have been waiting for ten months for my passport. My status says 'in process' but nothing yet. What can I do to get it now? I'm hearing that other people are getting theirs quickly. So why is that? Please help.

Answer: We cannot provide an explanation as to why some applications are processed faster than others. It is possible that some documents are missing and need to be submitted. Please contact the NPIC at 1-877-487-2778 to find out why your application has taken this long to process.

Question: I submitted my application on May 28th. It states it is being processed after being received on July 6. Do the 18 weeks start from May 28th when I submitted it in the post office. Or does it start from July 6th when they started processing it?

Please help. My trip is coming. I’m getting nervous. Thank you.

Answer: The 18 weeks approximation is counted from the day you submitted the application at the post office to the day your passport arrives at your doorstep. There MAY be some delays in the mailing.

Need renewal by October
by: James

Question: I am a US citizen living in Spain. I have read the articles about the huge backlog and delays in getting passports renewed.

I will fly to Dallas next week (July 29). My return flight is October 10. My passport expires on August 23, after my arrival but before my return.

With about 10 weeks to get my renewal, what do you suggest is the best way to get my passport renewed in time for my return to Spain? Thanks for the advice.

Answer: Hello, James. You may employ the service of a private passport expediter to renew your passport. Our trusted service, Rush My Passport, can get a renewal completed in an average of 4.5 weeks.

Your other option is to wait until two weeks before your scheduled trip back to Spain and schedule an appointment at a regional passport agency. Your appointment date must be 3 business days before your departure date. You can bring your renewal requirements and proof of travel to your appointment in person.

Appointments are extremely limited at this time and those traveling due to a life-or-death emergency are prioritized.

Question: I leave for Mexico July 27 and it’s July 20. It’s for my birthday and I still haven’t received it. I did the passport appointment on April 15 but did the routine service instead of expedited. Is there any other way to get a passport faster?

Answer: Only a regional agency can issue your passport faster. You need to schedule an appointment and bring proof of your upcoming trip. A passport will be issued to you in 72 hours less if all your requirements are in order.

Question: I applied for my passport on May 4 and opted for standard processing time. At this time it was 6 weeks processing and 6 weeks to mail. I was okay with this because I figured it would arrive by my travel date, which is August 2nd.

I see that it wasn’t received until June 2nd & it is now 18 weeks to process for standard time. What am I supposed to do? It still hasn’t even been approved yet & I have under 2 weeks before I’m supposed to travel.

Answer: You can schedule an appointment to apply at a regional passport agency. Your appointment must be no sooner than 3 business days of your travel date.

Question: I expedited my passports for me and the family on June 21. My flight is July 25 and still have no word on my passports. What should I do? Should I be worried?

Answer: Expedited service may take up to 12 weeks -- 6 weeks to process and an additional 6 weeks to mail. Maxing out this period, you cannot expect your passports to arrive before your trip.

The only place that can issue your passports in time for your travel is a regional passport agency. Schedule an appointment at an agency and bring proof of your upcoming trip. Your passports will be issued within 72 hours or less.

In case you don't get an appointment and need to move your travel dates, we strongly recommend waiting for the passports to arrive before making any final travel arrangements.

I fly in a week and no update to status

Question: Passport agent received my application and documents on 7/6, the check was cashed on 7/7 and paid for expedited service along with 2-day return mail. I haven't received an update and can't get an in-person appointment as there are 0 available. I fly on July 26, what can I do? I reached out to senators and congressmen, but no luck yet.

Answer: Your only course of action is to apply/follow up at a regional agency. Some users have shared that slots can open between 11 PM and 3 AM. Maybe you will be able to secure a slot during those hours.

Question: I applied for my passport on April 22 and it was received on May 25. It's now July 18 and it's still processing. I was told by my post office I would have it in time for my travel on August 12th and I'm getting worried I won't have it in time.

I submitted an online request for expedited service on July 7 out of fear and still haven't heard back and when applying I paid for 1-2 day shipping extra. So will I have it in time for travel/ what do I do???? Help!!!!

Answer: The Department of State's service commitment is to process expedited requests within 20 days of receipt of the said request. You will know that your request is being processed if your payment for expedited service was charged to your account.

Check when the payment was charged to your account and count 22 days (including shipping). That is when you can expect your passport to arrive.

As a backup plan, you can schedule an appointment at a regional agency so you can followup in person of your application remains in process. Your appointment date must be within 3 business days of your departure date.

Question: My family applied for expedited passports on June 3. They arrived both by June 14 and my status is also the same approved and they are printing since June 14. We have an international trip coming up on Aug 5. I missed adding travel dates in my application form.

Can I call the call center and add it to my application? Otherwise, are the appointments at the SFO consulate attainable? Should I just cancel my trip? We would incur a loss of at least 2500$.

Answer: It is still possible that your passport will arrive but there are no guarantees. While it can be very hard to secure an appointment, it is not impossible. Some users have had success trying between the hours of 11 PM and 3 AM. Please make sure you are setting an appointment for August 2 and not a day sooner.

If you can secure an appointment, your passport will be issued within 72 hours or less. There will then be no need to cancel your trip.

Question: Sent in my passport renewal end of May, they received it June 3, status is "in process". Our flight is less than 5 days, I am the only one waiting for my passport. There are no available appointments in LA. Will I be able to get in the office if I do a walk-in?

Answer: Appointments are strictly required. You will very likely be turned away if you show up without one.

Question: I'm panicking. It's July 17 and our travel date is August 1. My husband and I received our passports but have not received my daughter's. I need help, I have been emailing and trying to get an appointment and nothing is available.

Answer: Appointments will be available to you 2 weeks before your trip so that will be on July 18. You can start checking at 11PM tonight for an appointment. You can try other locations if the one closest to you does not have a slot available.

Please make sure that your appointment date is no sooner than July 18 -- 3 business days before your travel date. Please make sure to bring proof of travel in your daughter's name.

Question: I applied for both my daughter's and my passports on April 12. Our passports were not received until June 17. On July 13th I submitted for expedited services. Our trip is on September 16th. Should I be worried?

Answer: There is no reason to worry at this point. We recommend monitoring your application status closely and check your email regularly for updates from passport services.

Relax - Your Passport Will Arrive
by: Jennifer

Okay everyone. I have been on this message board for the last two weeks freaking out like most of you about obtaining my passport in time for my trip. Here's what I can share, based on my experience, you will recieve your passport on time as long as you requested expedited service and allow for at least 4 weeks.

6/14 - Submitted application at post office
6/18 - /Received by Dept of State under review
Now for whatever reason, the Dept of State was delayed updating the status on the website but I received approval confirmation and shipping information on July 14, 2021. Here's where it gets even more scary, the delivery date according to USPS was set for July 17 by 9pm but we are scheduled to depart July 17 at 7:50 am. However, I received my passport on Friday, July 16, 2021 at 12:00 pm. Phew, it was scary for a moment but I received on time and all is well for me to travel internationally. I share this to save you from countless sleepless nights like me, attempting to talk to a live person only to learn that they are unable to access your application nor track processing and I really want to save you from trying a million times over to secure an appointment at a Regional Office. I just want to help bring comfort because I nearly had a heart attack over this entire experience. Good luck to you.

Question: I applied for standard shipping for my passport on April 13th because they said my passport would come in on time for my trip on August 3rd. Now they are saying it will take 18 weeks?? Is my passport still going to come in on time?

Answer: Routine service still takes 10 to 12 weeks to process but it may take an additional 6 weeks to mail on the front and back end, hence the 18 weeks. Based on this timeline, your passport may not arrive until the third week of August. While there is a good chance it will arrive before then, there are no guarantees.

Travel dates missing in application
by: Anonymous

Question: Does it matter I did not mention my travel dates in the application? I opted for expedited service though. I applied on June 3. It was approved on June 14 but not mailed.

I have international travel on Aug 4.

Answer: Passport services may take your travel date into consideration when they are able. These days, however, not so much because of the volume of applications and limited manpower.

Expedited service may take up to 12 weeks, which means your passport may not arrive until the last week of August.

You can get your passport issued before your trip if you go to a regional passport agency. Appointments are required and it must be within 3 business days of your travel date.

Schedule an Appointment

Appointments are extremely limited these days so you will need to spend a considerable amount of time trying to schedule one. Some users have reported that slots open before midnight until the very early hours of the mornings.

Passport approved month ago but not mailed

Question: Hi.

My family applied for expedited passports on June 3. My husband and kids got theirs by 14 June.

My status was approved by June 14 but it has not been mailed. Today is 15 July.

I have international travel coming up on August 4. Please help. Limited appointments at the consulate is driving me crazy. Please help.

Answer: It is still possible for your passport to arrive before your trip. If the status says it is already approved and completed, it should already be on its way. Delivery may only be delayed due to USPS' large volume of mail.

Question: Help!!!

Our flight is on July 21 and still no sign of my passport.

Answer: Please schedule an appointment at a regional agency so you can follow up in person. Appointments are very limited at this time you have to keep trying until you get one. Only a regional agency can issue your passport before your departure date.

Traveling next week

Question: Hello. We sent our son's passport over 10 weeks ago. We are scheduled to leave for our cruise next Friday. I can't seem to get an appointment slot to go to the Los Angeles Office. Can I go in with my son's social security number and my driver's license?

Answer: Regional agencies like the one in Los Angeles strictly require an appointment. If you go to the agency without one, you will only be turned away. Keep trying to schedule an appointment; it does not have to be in Los Angeles. You can apply at other regional agencies.

If you are going on a closed-loop cruise (one that starts and ends in the same U.S. port), a passport may not be required. Minors may present only their birth certificates as proof of U.S. citizenship.

FYI On Expedited Passports
by: Anonymous

I promised myself if I got my passport on time (I did) I would share my experience to help out any others concerned about receiving a passport on time. For context, I mailed in my application for an expedited passport (renewing my original) on June 7 2021 with an anticipated travel date of July 16 2021 (5 weeks out). I paid for expedited shipping both ways. I was later told by a representative that I applied right on the cusp of when they changed the anticipated door-to-door time from up to 6 weeks to up to 12 weeks.

My passport was marked accepted and In Progress on June 12 2021. At 4 weeks out, I started getting concerned that no updates had been made online, so I started doing research and saw how so many people were not receiving their passports on time and started to panic. My passport did arrive on time (came on July 15 2021 - 1 day before anticipated travel!), but I still wanted to share my experience to hopefully help others not waste time trying to get more information and/or book an urgent appointment:

1) DO NOT waste your time trying to call in to the national number. I called about 50 times over the course of a week and received a busy dial tone and then was disconnected about 49/50 times. I was finally able to get through (right when the business hours started) and was on a 3 hour wait before I spoke with someone. I had a list of about ten questions just trying to see if I could get absolutely any additional information other than what was online, and the rep I spoke with, although very kind, could tell me absolutely nothing and could not help me book an urgent appointment either (all they can see if what shows online).

2) DO NOT try to visit a regional passport office to beg for an appointment. That is one thing the rep I spoke with told me - no matter what, they will not see you without an appointment.

3) DO use the Online Passport Appointment System page to try and book an urgent appointment (must be within 72 hrs of travel). It will seem like there are no appointments, but if you have the time to look in other areas and refresh constantly, you will see appointments pop up. I did this for hours and saw one appointment open up in Buffalo (someone else accepted it before I did, so click fast) and one open up in Honolulu which I wasn't willing to travel to. I didn't end up needing the appointment b/c I received a notification my passport was being printed in time, but persevering with this path would have been my back up plan.

4) One last general note is that the status online is not as quick to update as what they confirm by email, so make sure you give them a contact email. Via email I received alerts when my passport was accepted and printed and then again when it was shipped. The online status for me has not changed since it was first marked In Progress, even after I received my passport.

Sincerely hope this helps someone. This was a really stressful process for me (was worried I would miss my honeymoon!) so I know what you are going though. Good luck!

Passport delay

Question: I went to the post office on May 15 for my passport. Was told I did not need to expedite my passport for a trip in August.

They did not receive my application until June 22. Two of my friends that filed after me have already gotten their passports. What can I do to get mine in time? Can I pay the 60 now to hurry the process?? Help.

Answer: Hello, Susan. You may contact the NPIC at 1-877-487-2778 to see if you can switch to expedited service at the stage of processing your application is already in. The contact center is open Mondays through Fridays from 8AM to 10OM Eastern time.

Misunderstood and running out of time

Question: Does the routine 18 weeks being from the day I actually applied at the post office or the day the U.S department receives my application? The max time has changed since I’ve applied and worried I’m won’t get my passport in time.

Answer: Routine service takes approximately 18 weeks from the day you submitted the application to the day you receive the passport.

Application Status: Not Available

Question: We submitted my 17yo daughter's passport renewal, and included her expired passport, on 6/26 (a Saturday). We paid for expedited service and two-day delivery. The application was received in Philadelphia, PA on 6/29 at @11:30am. Since then all I see when I check the status of her application is "Not Available".

My niece, who is 13, had her application submitted the same day and she received her passport today (7/14). We are leaving for Mexico on 8/7 and I am really starting to panic. Shouldn't I at least be seeing "in-process" by now?

Answer: Since you said renewal, I am assuming you submitted Form DS-82 by mail. If you did submit DS-82 instead of DS-11 in person, that may be the problem.

Passports issued when one was a minor cannot be renewed. At 17, your child should have applied in person at an acceptance facility for her first adult U.S. passport. The application may be pending because passport services sent you a letter asking you to send the right forms and documents.

What you can do now is schedule an appointment at a regional agency so you can submit the correct requirements in person and get the passport issued in 72 hours or less. Your child must be there when the application is submitted. Your appointment date should be no sooner than 3 business days before your trip.

New Passport Requirements

If you did submit DS-11 and all the right requirements, you can go to the appointment with just proof of your upcoming trip and still get the passport issued (hopefully) on the same day.

Renewal of passport
by: Miriam

Question: Good afternoon. We (husband and I) sent in our request to renew our passports which you indicated you receive on June 15. We sent in extra money to expedite and overnight them back to us.

Looking at the timeline, there is zero chance that we will receive them before our flight on Sunday, August 1. Is there anything that can be done other than going to the passport office on Wednesday, July 28 such as to fast-track our request since they are renewal requests rather than petitions for new passports?

From the other comments, I am concerned that if we wait until July 28, the line will be hundreds of people long and we will not be able to receive them in time. Please advise. Thank you very much for your assistance.

Answer: Hello, Miriam. Good day! This website is privately-owned. We provide information on passport applications and issuance but we are not a government agency. We did not receive your applications.

At this point, only a regional agency can issue your passports in time for your trip. The Department of State requires that appointments be no sooner than 3 business days before your travel date. If you get an appointment, your requirements are in order and you can present proof of imminent international travel, you will be issued passports in 72 hours or less. There won't be hundreds of people waiting in line since regional agencies are on an appointment basis only.

Question: My passport application was received on 6/1. I received an email from the passport center stating that my application was approved and I will receive my passport book on or around 7/5/21.

I have not received my passport as of yet. I tried calling but the young man said he does not have any information why I did not receive my passport. I'm leaving on 8/5. I paid for expedited service. What should I do? Can I schedule an appointment and do I need to fill out another form and payment? Please help.

Answer: The passport could already be on its way but delivery may just be delayed. It is very likely that your passport will still arrive before your trip. After all, it's still weeks away.

Question: I went to the passport office in May because I lost my passport and am going to Mexico on July 21st. They had me fill everything out and I paid for expedited.

Last week I got a letter saying that I didn't fill out the lost passport form. They didn't tell me to! Now, I may not get my passport in time. I've tried calling, went to the passport office today right when they opened but there were 1,000 people in line already. Any advice?

Answer: Hi, Maddy. Please send the missing requirement ASAP. Also, schedule an appointment at a regional agency so you can follow up in person in case your passport does not arrive.

Make sure that your appointment is no sooner than July 19 (3 business days before your travel date).

Expedited Wait Times
by: LP

Hello, this comment is to give you an idea of what the processing times were for me, after paying for the expedited service.

I completed two applications online and then printed them at home. Then I walked into a local post office on June 4 at 1:15 pm and mailed them to the Philadelphia address. I included a personal check with the processing fee, including the fee for a passport card, expedited services, and return express shipping. I paid for Priority Mail Express 1-Day going out to Philly. (Pro-tip, use the same envelope to send more than one application to save money). I received a text notification saying the envelope had arrived at its destination the very next day at 6/5 at 11:30 pm.

I checked the status of the applications online and it said it was processing. It listed a date of 6/9 as the date they received it. No change in status for the rest of the month.

I received an email on 7/12 saying the passport books and cards had been approved and that I could expect to receive them in the mail on or about 7/15.

I tracked the package and it arrived at the regional destination facility, distribution center in my city on 7/13 at 7:56 am. I anticipate this will arrive either today or on time tomorrow the 15th.

If it does arrive this week then it would have taken one month and a little under two weeks from start to finish, from the post office, drop off to my mailbox at home.

I hope this gives you an idea of the current wait times when it comes to planning for your processing times. Also, I checked both passport statuses throughout this process and both were the exact same, the whole time.

Question: I paid for expedited services for my and my kids' passports. I sent them 2nd day and it took a week for them to receive. I am a week away from my family trip that has been planned and paid for over a year and I have yet to receive the passports.

I do not live close to an agency where I can schedule an appt to travel for a 3-day appointment to see if they will issue passports right away. I do have family in El Paso that I can schedule the appt and they can take my proof of travel documents and represent my kids and me and see if we can get our passports that way.

Is that possible? I also did pay for overnight back to me. My trip is scheduled for July 22. Which is very soon. Please Help!

Answer: Yes, you may authorize someone to go to the passport agency on your behalf. You need to provide that person a signed letter of authorization. Please make sure that the appointment date no sooner than 3 business days before your travel date.

Expedited service
by: Anonymous

Question: Hello. I know that expedited service has been moved to 10-12 weeks. However, I applied on June 10th, before they made the change. Would the normal 4-6 weeks for expedited still apply for my application?

Answer: The processing time has not changed, it is still 4 to 6 weeks but due to setbacks with USPS, it may take an additional 6 weeks for mailing on the front and back end. While it is possible that your passport will get to you in less than 12 weeks, guarantees cannot be made.

Desperate, need before driving 8 hours pre-flight

Question: My husband and I applied for standard processing to RENEW our passports. We sent them registered mail on May 24. Checking our status they RECEIVED them June 24, and are in REVIEW status, despite the records from USPS showing received on May 27th. Our Mexico trip is our 30th anniversary in August. We are driving from Myrtle Beach to Baltimore 2 days earlier to stay with friends so we can fly non-stop to Cancun from there. I'm concerned now that our trip may have to cancel because we won't receive our passports on time. We can't even schedule an appointment within 72 hours of travel because we will be out of town. Is it possible to schedule an appointment in another state other than where we live? I hate to see this special anniversary trip go up in smoke. Thanks in advance for any advice you may have.

Answer: Hello, Dawn. Hopefully, your passports will arrive but just in case, you may apply in a different state. Just schedule an appointment and bring proof of your upcoming international trip.

Question: My application status has been approved and the expected delivery date was July 5, it is now July 13. My flight to Mexico is in two days (July 15). I got in contact with a human being after 7 hours of wait time and she was absolutely no help & I never received a tracking number. I am trying to make an appointment at the nearest agency however there is none, I've been refreshing the page all day & will continue to do so at 11pm tonight as most people recommended.

At this point, I have no idea what to do. Please let me know what I can do to get my passport before my flight. I am also considering calling the state senate.

Answer: You are doing everything that you can to get your passport. Keep trying to get an appointment. Calling a senator may help but if the passport is already in transit, there may be nothing to do but wait.

Worried about my Trip
by: Maisie

Question: I applied for a passport renewal by mail on May 24th at that time, routine service said 10 weeks total which would be in time for my trip to Greece on August 14th.

I didn’t know it would take 6 weeks to arrive there because at that time they hadn’t updated their mailing/processing times.

On June 24th I got an email update that it was in process after all that time and that processing times were now 10-12 weeks not including up to 6 weeks back to me.

After trying to call literally over 100 times plus emails and being on hold for over 3 hours twice I finally spoke to a human being. She said on July 1st that she submitted my application to expedited with 1-2 day shipping.

It’s coming up on two weeks since She did that and my debit card hasn’t been charged and my application still says in process. She told me to give it a couple of days till it updates and that it would take 20 days max to get to me. She reassured me that it would be getting to me on time but I am not feeling great about it since it’s almost 2 weeks since that convo and she said to give it a couple days.

Looking for any advice/someone that had a similar situation.

My trip to Greece includes multiple hotels Multiple domestic flights and I am only going with one other person. Needless to say, I could lose over 4,000 with owing her money.

Will my passport come in time?

Is the online application status system behind?
How long did it take for other people's status to change after switching to expedited? I’ve literally had so much anxiety/stress about it the last month, it is not good.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Answer: Hi, Maisie. We are not a government agency so we cannot provide you with answers as to the actual status of your application and whether or not it is being processed as an expedited service. The switch to expedited service is approved or denied depending on how far along into the process your application is.

It is possible that your passport will arrive before your departure date but there are no guarantees. What you can do for now is try to schedule an appointment at a regional passport agency so you can follow up in person in case the passport does not arrive.

Schedule an Appointment

Your appointment date must be no sooner than 3 business days before your departure date. Some users have reported that 11PM is the best hour to try and schedule an appointment.

Passport expedited is now 12 weeks

Question: My kid's passport was accepted on 6/18. My international flight is on 7/23. I was told the passport process for expeditated is 4 to 6 weeks. I checked online it's still in process. I called they no longer give updated information on the passport as of last week. There are no appointments at my local office.

Answer: Expedited service may take up to 4 to 6 weeks to process and about 6 weeks to mail on the front and back end. This means the whole process can take up to 12 weeks.

You need to schedule an appointment so you can get the passport issued before your trip. Please make sure your appointment is no sooner than 3 business days before your travel date.

Appointments are extremely limited so be prepared to spend a considerable amount of time trying to secure one.

Extremely Nervous
by: Anonymous

Question: I mailed my application to receive a new passport through my local post office on June 16. I paid for the expedited service and received a status update on June 18.

My confirmation is 346018774. My status has remained in review status and has not changed. My fiance mailed a renewal application on the same day (June 16) and she received her renewal passport on July 9 in the mail.

We are scheduled for international travel on Saturday, July 17 and my status has not changed, it is still in review status. I have called the regional office in Chicago, IL and the number provided just gives a busy signal.

Also, I am unable to make an online appointment because there are no available appointments. I am also unable to speak with a live person at the National Passport Information Center. Since we leave in 5-days, I urgently need to obtain my passport. Please help! Tell me what I need to do to get my passport asap.

Answer: As we are not a government agency, we cannot explain why your application is still in review. Only the NPIC can provide you with answers. Also, only a regional agency can issue a passport in the time you require. Please keep trying to schedule an appointment as it's your only hope of getting a passport before July 17th.

Question: Hi. I did the application for my daughter's passport and I did expedite too. We want to leave because my grandma is dying. Our flight is on July 19. I try to call and make an appointment but nothing. What do I do? Please help me.

Answer: Individuals who need to travel urgently due to a qualified life-or-death emergency are prioritized. If you have proof that you need to travel because of a life-or-death emergency, you may call the following numbers for an appointment:

Mondays through Fridays 8 AM to 5PM ET: 1-877-487-2778 (TDD/TTY:1-888-874-7793)

Question: Hi there. I applied for a passport on June 10th with expedited service. Should my passport get here before August or by at least the first week of August? I plan on traveling somewhere on August 8th.

Answer: Expedited service may take up to 12 weeks from the day you submitted the application to the day it arrives on your doorstep. Based on this timeline, your passport should arrive by the first week of September, not August.

We recommend not making any final travel arrangements until your passport arrives in the mail.

Passport Agency Appointments

Question: Hello. My trip to Mexico is scheduled for July 29th and still have not received my expedited passport. It was received on June 3rd and is still processing. Can I schedule an "online" appointment at a Passport Agency, or do I need to call to schedule my appointment? No one answers the phones.

Answer: It is actually recommended that you schedule your appointment online. The contact center is receiving a large volume of calls which means you may be on hold for hours on end before you can get an agent on the line. And even when you do, if no appointment is available online, the agent will still be unable to assist you. They do not have access to an alternate reservation system.

Please make sure that your appointment date is no sooner than 3 business days before your travel date.

Need Passport Assistance!!

Question: I applied for expedited passport service on May 28th. My application was received on June 3rd. My date of travel is July 31st.

I called and tried to upgrade to 2-day shipping and was told there were no guarantees I would receive it. I am now 3 weeks out from my trip and like everyone else unable to get answers on the status of my passport.

I was told to make an appointment at my Passport Agency, but have little hope of getting one. Getting through on the phone is impossible. Desperate for assistance.

Answer: You were actually given the only advice applicable to your situation -- schedule an appointment at a regional agency in case your passport does not arrive.

While it is possible that it will arrive before your trip, guarantees cannot be made. Your next step is to ensure you can follow up in person and get the passport issued 72 hours (or less) before your scheduled travel date.

Schedule an Appointment

Your appointment date must be no sooner than 3 business days before your departure date. You can start trying to set one up two weeks before your trip. Some say 11PM is the best time to go on the site and try to secure an appointment.

Please help!! Application submitted in March
by: Abigail

Question: I submitted an application for my daughter on March 24 and still waiting. At the time I was told I would receive her passport by June the latest, no need to pay for expedited service.

I have a flight and hotel booked for July 18th. I have checked the status which is still in process, I have called the call center several times but no one really helps me and I constantly check for an available appointment at a regional agency but no luck. It’s been months, what can I do?

Answer: Hello, Abigail. At this point, only a regional agency can issue the passport before your travel date. Please continue trying to schedule an appointment so you can get the passport issued in 72 hours or less.

Question: Hi! My passport application was accepted on June 9. My trip is July 22 and I applied using expedited service. I'm afraid it won't arrive in time for my trip so I was able to make an appointment for July 21. Will I get my passport that same day, which is the day before my trip?

Answer: Provided that all your documents are complete and you show sufficient proof of your upcoming trip, it is very likely that you will get your passport.

Answer: There will be no need to redo the application. Passport services will already have your documents on file so all you need to bring is proof of your upcoming international travel.

Stressed out!!!!
by: Anonymous

Question: I am totally freaking out. I applied for my passport on April 17. I asked at the time of application if I should apply for expedited services and was told no and assured that I would have my passport in time for travel on Aug 27.

They received my passport on May 24 and is now in process. Then I receive an email stating that there is a change in processing time to be 18 weeks (12 for process, 6 for mail delivery back to me), to start AFTER they receive my application. So that is a total of 24 weeks. I called and added expedited service with 3-day mail, for an additional $180 for 2 passports, for them to still not have taken out the money and being told that if it does not get transferred to expedited and received in 3 days, there is no refund. This is crazy. There has to be something that can be done about this. At this rate, I will not receive my passport until September according to their timeline.

My trip was a ton of money and is also non-refundable. Please help get this in control and lead me in the right direction. I am so stressed about this. What can I do? Any help is welcome. Thank you in advance.

Answer: There is a very good chance your passport will arrive in time since you already paid for expedited service and express delivery. But just in case it does not, you can go to a regional passport agency to followup and get the passports issued in 72 hours or less.

Regional agencies require an appointment which you can start setting up 2 weeks before your travel date. Your appointment date must be no sooner than 3 business days prior to your departure.

Question: Hello,

I applied for a passport on 4/26, but it wasn’t received until 5 weeks later on 6/7. When I applied, they said it would be 4-6 weeks. Now, that time has changed to 12 weeks and I travel in one week on 7/16. I cannot get through to the agency, no one has answered my emails, and I even got my congressman involved, only to have his emails and calls go unanswered as well. He told me that the website is delayed and that the online passport tracking is behind by a few days. When I called on Wednesday, I got through after waiting for about two hours. When I called today, it didn’t even give me the option to speak with someone. I can’t schedule an emergency appointment because there aren’t any, and people are scheduling them and reselling the appointments for thousands of dollars. I paid for expedited services when I applied as well as 1-2 delivery. It’s still in process and I am desperate for help.

My trip is non-refundable and I cannot lose this money as I spent a long time saving this money. What do I do? Who can I contact? Is there any chance of my passport coming in on time? Please, PLEASE help me.

Answer: At this point, you have done everything you can possibly do to get your passport in time for your trip. What you can continue doing is to try and set up an appointment at a regional agency. Cancellations can happen at any time and if you keep trying, you just might get a spot. Please make sure that your appointment date is no sooner than 3 business days before your travel date.

Question: I applied for my child's passport on May 28 and it's still in process. My flight is on July 18 and I managed to make an appointment at an agency in a different state. Does it matter?

Also, I want to know if my kids have to be present the day of the appointment? Do I need to bring all documents again since I already started the process?

Answer: You may apply in a different state. The children not need to be present and there will also be no need to resubmit the requirements.

No one answers phones, no appointments either
by: frustrated customer

Question: We have applied for a passport at the beginning of June. Five weeks later it shows 'processing'. Still no passport. We are traveling in 2 weeks. Tickets are non-refundable.

No one answers the phone lines (I have been trying multiple times daily for two weeks now) and the website for appointments constantly crashes as it is probably overwhelmed. People are depending on you to get their passports. You need to give us options that are actually working.

Answer: We are a private company and are not connected to the Department of State in any way. There is nothing we can do to speed up the processing of your passport and we base our advices on the latest information provided in the Department of State's website.

Routine processing takes up to 12 weeks plus 6 weeks to mail on the front and back end. If you paid for expedited service, the processing is down to 6 weeks plus mailing of 6 weeks.

Assuming you submitted your application in the first week of June, your passport should arrive by the second week of October (routine service) or by the fourth week of August (expedited). This is provided that there are no further delays in the mailing.

The only way you can get your passport issued sooner is to apply at a regional agency. Appointments are strictly required and those who are traveling due to a qualified life or death emergency are prioritized.

Schedule an Appointment

We are aware that appointments are very hard to secure at the moment but that is your only option at this point. We can only advise you to try again and hope a slot opens. Some users have been successful booking appointments at 11PM.

Should the worst happen and you need to cancel your trip, we strongly recommend not making any final travel arrangements again until you receive your passport.

Status "not available" for 2 months
by: YR

Question: I have submitted my application by mail in early May (not expedited) and the check was cashed on June 10. The application status is still not available. I have been trying to call the phone number dozens of times and am only getting a busy signal.

As per your response to my prior inquiry, I have NOT received any communication by mail or email about any possible errors on the application. I travel in a few weeks and am at a loss.

I cannot expedite since I cannot reach anyone, I do not know if my application is lost, I am unable to secure an appointment at my regional center either as there have not been any appointments available the many times I have tried. Any other suggestions? Is there any other way of finding out about my application?

Answer: Appointments will be available to you two weeks before your travel date. One user was able to successfully secure an appointment at 11PM 15 days before her departure date. Perhaps you can also do this.

The NPIC contact center is receiving a large volume of calls. This is why it seems like no one is answering. If you would like to speak to an agent, we recommend calling during opening hour. Live agents are available Mondays through Fridays 8AM to 10PM.

I have only two weeks until my flight.
by: ASA ZAN

Question: Hello. I went to the post office on April 29 to apply for my passport. They said it would take 4 to 6 weeks. However, by the 8th week, it had still not come. So on June 24th, I called the passport agency place and requested for my service to be upgraded to expedited.

Just yesterday they took money out of my account for that. Does this mean that my passport will arrive earlier? Or should I go to a passport agency to get it in person? And if so, would I have to do a new application there, and would that cause conflict with my current application? Would I have to cancel my current application?
I would appreciate any help because I have a ticket for July 24th and I can't return it. Also, I have already changed my flight dates three times and can't risk doing it anymore.

Answer: It is highly likely that your application is being processed with expedited service since the payment was taken from your account.

Should you need to follow up in person at a regional agency, there will be no need to resubmit your requirements and pay the expedite fee again. You just need to bring proof of your upcoming international travel. The pending application will already be in the system so there will be no conflict.

Please note that your appointment at the regional agency must be no sooner than 3 business days before your departure date.

My status now finally says Shipped but will i receive it

Question: Hi. I applied for my passport on April 19 and my trip is on Aug 10th. It says it could take 6 weeks door-to-door time. My status says Shipped now after saying In Process for 12 weeks.

It says it should arrive around or on 07/12 but the website also says it could take 6 weeks door to door. I dunno what to think if'll have it in time or not. Could it still take 6 more weeks to get to my house??

Answer: It is likely that your passport will arrive around the ETA posted but guarantees cannot be made. Delivery depends on the USPS's operations.

Lost passport
by: Bridgett

Question: I applied for my daughter's passport on March 30 and it is now July 7. I check the status and it says it was going to be here on 5/19. We had a travel date 6/20 lost $2500 on tickets I call almost every day to only get a busy signal. I need to know if I need to do reapply. Do I still have to repay? I did apply to expedite the first time.

Answer: You need to contact the NPIC at 1-877-487-2778 to confirm that the passport has been mailed to you. If it was, ask for the address of the processing center that issued it and the passport's issue date.

Once you have these information, you may file Form DS-86 Statement of Non-Receipt of U.S. Passport in order to get one reissued at no cost to you.

We strongly recommend waiting until you receive the actual passport before making any final travel arrangements.

Can't get a hold of anyone!
by: Anonymous

Question: I applied for my passport to change my last name back in April. I didn't do the expedited at that time because the wait times weren't as long as they are now. My status online says it was received on 5/25 but they sent a letter saying I didn't sign my application.

I sent the signed form back that same day and have had no status update. I travel in August and am worried I won't get it in time. I have called the NPIC for days and have gotten nothing but the busy tone and then hung up on. I am trying to pay for the expedited service and shipping but can't get a hold of anyone. HELP!

Answer: There is no other way to pay for expedited service in your case. You need to speak to a customer service rep to pay for the service using a credit card over the phone. You may be able to get someone to answer if you call during opening hour.

HELP!
by: Anonymous

Question: I applied for my son's passport on 3/26/21. I checked the online application status and it was submitted to them on 4/7/21. May goes by, nothing.

June I received a letter stating that the consent form was not filled out correctly. They made it seem like there was an issue with my name but this whole time it turned out the consent form that this father filled out was missing my son's information.

I just found out this today 7/6. The problem is that my son and his father are on vacation in HI and won't return until 7/12. My international trip is on 8/7. The agency called today to explain what was incorrect but the letter did not say anything in regard to that. She mentioned that I can fill out the form and drop it off at the Dallas passport office instead of putting it in the mail.

My question is will I have my son's passport in time if I go and drop the form off when they return from their trip? This has been a horrible experience and a hassle. I forgot to mention that I lost a whole month because the letter that I received in June was dated 4/20 but did not receive it until June!!!

Answer: Processing will resume once the required document is received. Expedited processing takes 4 to 6 weeks. It may or may not arrive in time for your trip.

Please contact the NPIC at 1-877-487-2778 for more information. The contact center is open Mondays through Fridays from 8AM to 10PM.

Unable to schedule at Reg Passport Facility

Question: Our passports have been "In Process" since May 11. I've been on hold, more times than I can count. Today I spent 5 hours on hold, a person answered, I gave them the info and then they hung up on me!!!! Why?

Other comments on this site indicate to try at 11PM but unable to even schedule a time, much less pick a time at 11PM. Is the Colorado Passport Agency (in Aurora) the only facility that can issue passports? Or does the USPO - ALTURA MEGACENTER also issue passports? Thanks for any help provided!!

Answer: All regional passport agencies can issue passports but only a few cater to applicants traveling for reasons other than a qualified life or death emergency. Unfortunately, the Department of State has not specified which agencies cater to non-emergency travel.

by: Anonymous

Question: I saw that it said to bring your application, old passport, new passport picture, and other documents needed for your appointment. How am I supposed to do that if I mailed in all of that back in May?

Answer: There is no need to resubmit your requirements. You only need to present proof of your upcoming trip during your appointment.

Also, your appointment date must be within 3 business days of your travel date. You do not have to wait until 72 hours before your trip to try and schedule an appointment.

Question: I tried really hard to get an appointment at an agency but did not have any luck at all and sent my and my sibling's application through the mail using the expedited service with my travel itinerary last month.

My flight is on July 20 and I am worried they are not going to get here in time and I will lose my money and also tried calling customer service but had no luck since it's always busy.

Answer: Since your applications have already been submitted, only a passport agency can issue the passports faster.

Question: I applied for a passport renewal in early May. The check was cashed on June 10th but my application status is still "not available" as of today 7/6. It has been nearly a month and the passport application is still en route to a processing facility? I have travel in less than a month and am worried the passport application got lost. Please help!

Answer: Please contact the NPIC at 1-877-487-2778 regarding your application. Also, please check your mail for any communication from passport services. They may have sent you one asking for more documents which explains why your application is still not in process.

Will I receive my passport?
by: Anonymous

Question: I applied for expedited passport renewal and next-day mail. My application was received and put in process on June 8th. I have international travel plans for August 6th.
Will I get my passport in time?

Answer: We cannot tell you whether or not your passport will arrive on time. But based on the information you provided, it is likely that it will arrive on time. Processing takes up to 6 weeks from the time it arrives at the processing center. Since it started processing on June 8th, it should be done by the third week of July. You paid for 1-2 day delivery so it should arrive shortly after.

Finally got appointment date
by: Anonymous

Question: After continually trying to get an appointment online I finally did. I encourage anyone struggling to keep trying between 11 PM and 9 AM as that is when they make appointments "live". Took me several days till it finally worked for me.

Does anyone know what forms of proof of international travel are acceptable? I want to make sure everything is in order for the appointment.

Answer: Thank you for sharing!

You may present your airline tickets and submit a copy as proof of your upcoming international trip. Confirmation of your hotel reservation will also work.

Urgent travel
by: Anonymous

Question: Similar to many other comments, I sent in a renewal application on April 8 and it was in process May 7.

This was back before the mail and processing times were increased. I now have urgent travel on July 24 and no passport. I have been calling and staying on hold for 4+ hours daily, emailed 3 times, and checked the online reservation system all unsuccessful.

No one answers the phone, no responses to email, and no appointments available. I don’t see how I will receive my passport in time without some type of intervention. Please advise.

Answer: At this point, only a regional agency can issue a passport faster than a processing center. Appointments will be available to you 2 weeks before your trip -- this must be why nothing is open for you yet.

Your appointment date must be within 3 business days of your travel date. Appointments are limited but if you keep trying, you just might chance on a slot. One user said some appointments open up at 11PM.

Traveling in July 13th

Question: My passport has been showing in process since June 4th. I have called and was told to seek for an appointment for Washington DC agency but I have not been able to get one.

I have been trying since yesterday. Can I go to the agency office without appointment 3 days before my trip with my travel ticket? I am desperately in need of help. I submitted my application April 22nd, on June 23rd I was advised by an agent to pay for expediting which I did but NH has not honored it. Please can I go to the passport agency 3 days before my trip if I don't get it by then.

Answer: Passport agencies strictly require an appointment. People have been turned away when they attempted to walk in at an agency. We recommend trying again to get an appointment.

One user was advised to go to the appointment website at 11PM 15 days before her trip and she was able to see more than 10 slots available. Trying this might help.

I'm worried my passport won't arrive on time
by: Anonymous

Question: Hi! I applied for my passport this past Monday, June 28. At the facility, they told me the approximate waiting time for my passport to be processed was 2 to 3 months.

My flight is in September and I'm a little worried it won't arrive on time. It was my first time doing the passport process by myself and the lady didn't even offer me or let me know about the expedited service. I went back like an hour later and they told me that I couldn't pay for those services because it had already been "processed". I want to know what I can do to receive it before my flight.

Answer: You can call passport services at 1-877-487-2778 so you can pay for expedited service by credit card over the phone. If it goes through, your passport will be processed in about 12 weeks.

Question: Hi. Thank you for responding! We applied for our passports on April 9. They have been in process since May 11. I've paid the expedite fees but nothing has changed. We are scheduled to leave on July 22.

I've tried scheduling an appointment at our regional office in Aurora but no appointments are available. Other ideas to try? I've been on hold for a couple of hours now, as I want to attempt to schedule an appointment in Aurora. Is there a different # to use? Thanks for any help provided!

Can I get my passport at Vermont if my application is at NH?
by: Anonymous

Question: My flight is on July 15.

My application status was changed on May 26 so I called and paid for it to be expedited. Still not charged on my card, so after six and half hours on hold on my last phone call on June 30, and was told the NH passport agency has denied my request for expedited service.

Finally, I made an appointment for July 14 at the Vermont agency, and I'm flying on the 15th. Any chance I get my passport the same day? Thank you.

Answer: Regional agencies are able to issue passports on the same day. The agency in Vermont can issue your passport even if your original application is in New Hampshire. Please bring proof of your trip to your appointment.

In Process since 5/11/21

Question: My family & I applied for our passports on April 9, before the processing times were extended to 18 weeks!

They have been "In Process" since May 11. The check was cashed on May 11 but nothing since this time.

Friends/family applied for their passports in mid-April & got them back in early June & did not pay for expedited services.

I finally spoke with a human being on June 28 & paid the extra fees to expedite the service but there's no guarantee we will get them on time for our trip on July 22.

The expedited fees have still not been charged & nothing has changed on the status website.

I email almost daily & have never received a response.

Is there anything else we can do to ensure we get to go on our paid-for trip??

If I scheduled a time at the regional office, is it possible to get the passports there? Without applying again?

Thank you! 🙏

Answer: Yes, you may schedule an appointment at a regional agency. Your appointment must be no sooner than 3 business days before your trip and the passports will be issued in 72 hours or less.

There is no need to resubmit requirements and pay the fees. You just need to bring proof of your upcoming international trip to your appointment.

We are moving to Germany the first week of August and I would love to pay the extra fee for the expedited service and 1-2 day shipping but I can not reach anybody at the hotline. Please help!

Issue with passport
by: On the border

Question: The passport office received my application on 4-1 and there was an issue with my passport. I will be flying into Mexico on July 11th and I still have not received my passport. I also paid to expedite the passport this week to possibly receive the passport prior to flying out. My question is this: since I live on the border, can I go to the Mexican consulate and get permission to travel into Mexico via plane. Thanks.

Answer: A valid passport book is required to depart the United States by air. it is also required to re-enter the United States. It is very unlikely that a permission from your destination country can change this rule.

Question: I originally only paid for routine service because the passport website had not yet updated the estimated wait time to include all these extra months for mailing time. Once they updated routine service to show 18 WEEKS, I then called, somehow got through to a human being, and gave them my credit card info to pay for expedited service and 1-2 mailing.

It has now been over a week since I made that call and my card has not been charged nor my status changed online. How long does it take them to change your passport from routine to expedited? Does anyone have any tips for getting through to a human being again?

Answer: We do not have access to passport services' data so we cannot tell you how long it will take for the service to switch to expedited. You need to call again to find this out and calling at opening hour may give you a better chance at speaking to a live agent sooner.

Question: I applied for a passport on 05/11, it was received on 05/17. When I check it says in process. I don't know what to do, I'm traveling on 07/18 for my boyfriend's surgery.

Answer: It is still possible that your passport will arrive in time for your trip.

Individuals who are traveling urgently due to a life-or-death emergency are given priority on appointments at regional agencies. We're not sure if you qualify for this since you are technically not family but you can try.

Secure a signed medical certificate from your boyfriend's surgeon or attending physician as proof of the emergency. We can't guarantee that passport services will accept this without proof that you are next of kin but this is your best option. Once you have this, you may call 1-877-487-2778 (8AM-5PM) or 202-647-4000 (after hours) for an appointment. Your appointment date must be within 3 business days of your scheduled flight out of the country.

Question: I applied for my passport towards the end of April. It is currently June 30 and the passport is still in the "processing" phase. Also, the U.S. Passport Operation has stated that passports are now taking up to 18 WEEKS. When initially applying, I was told that my passport would get to me before the end of July. I’m less than 20 days out from my trip and I am nervous.

Answer: The Department of State has clarified that because of mailing delays, the time it takes from submission to actual arrival on your doorstep can be up to 18 weeks for standard service. Processing time is still the same -- up to 12 weeks for actual processing but mailing may take up to an additional 6 weeks.

What you can do is schedule an appointment at a regional agency. They can issue a passport within 72 hours if you have proof that you need to travel urgently. Your appointment date must be within 3 business days of your travel date.

You do not need to submit your requirements again but you need to pay for expedited service and present proof of your upcoming international trip.

Question: I mailed my application and expired passport for renewal and received an email confirmation on June 16 that my application and supporting documents are being reviewed. I also paid for expedited service. I am scheduled to depart on July 17 which I indicated on my renewal application.

I am getting nervous about the processing time. What do I do if my passport is not received by July 10 which is one week until my planned trip?

Answer: Expedited service may take up to 12 weeks -- this covers up to 6 weeks processing and an additional 6 weeks mailing on the front and back end. While it is possible that your passport will still arrive in time, there are no guarantees.

You can schedule an appointment at a regional agency so you can follow up in person in case your passport does not arrive. Your appointment date must be no sooner than July 14 (3 business days before your travel date).

HELP! passport renewal

Question: I applied for a passport on 5/15. I received a letter in the mail on 6/22 stating that I had not completed and/or signed the application.

I overnighted a new application on 6/23 with the information that I had (as I did not have the old passport number since they did not send that back). I have tried to call the hotline, but only get a busy signal every time. It still says 'in process' when I check the online status.

I did pay to have it expedited when I originally applied. My date of travel is 7/13/21. I made an appointment at an agency for 7/12/21 as it was the only appointment I could find before I go. If I have not gotten my passport by then will that office be able to issue me one same day even though I have an application being processed now through mail?

Answer: Yes, the passport agency will be able to issue a passport to you even with the pending application. In fact, there will be no need for you to submit requirements again and pay the fees. Also, the agency is able to issue same-day passports.

Urgent travel

Question: I have been trying to schedule an appointment for days and I finally found a slot open but is 5 days before my flight. I took it to secure something since I am traveling on July 20 and no time to do a passport application through the mail.

Do I have a chance to get a passport since my appointment is 5 days before my flight, not 3 days as they have mentioned? This is really bad what’s happening with the passport agency.

Answer: The Department of State has specified that appointments must be within 3 business days before your travel date. You may be entertained if the extra two days before your travel date fall on a weekend.

Passport agencies are still keeping up with the volume of applications that's why in-person appointments are still extremely limited.

Shedding a little light…. I paid for expediting service 5/14. Passport status updated to processing 5/19. I called the national process center everyday for 5 days straight asking for updates and commented on this page. Idk if it helped or what but my passport status changed to approved 6/22 and I received 6/24. Travel date 7/2. So if you expedited and getting close to your travel date, keep calling the number. It just might come on time.

Question: Help!!! I applied for renewal on 5/28, it was received on 5/31 when I check my status it says not available and it’s 6/29.

After trying to call I was able to talk to someone however they couldn’t find my application. I’m freaking out. I’m traveling in less than 10 weeks and if it’s not found I need to apply for a whole new passport and when I asked over the phone if I could maybe get an appointment if it gets close to that date she said they aren’t guaranteed.

I don’t know what to do like should I go and apply for a new passport or pray they find my application? I have never felt so nervous like I can’t afford to be on hold for another 3 hours.

Answer: Hi, Daniela. According to the Department of State's latest update, it may take up to 6 weeks for an application to appear as 'in process' in the tracking system. Your application is probably still on its way to the processing center and should be in the system soon.

There will be no need to submit a new application. Instead, you may contact passport services at 1-877-487-2778 to pay for expedited service plus express shipping to get your passport processed in 4 to 6 weeks after it is received at the processing center.

Where is my passport?
by: Zaire

Question: I applied for my passport on 5/21. And the passport status said it was reviewed on 5/28. It’s been about a month now and I still haven’t received my passport. I also specifically expedited my passport. I’m supposed to go on a trip in early July but it seems like I’m not gonna be able to go because it’s not here. Keep in mind I already paid and the trip is non-refundable.

Answer: We do not have access to the government's data so we cannot tell you where your passport is at the moment. What we do know is that expedited service can take up to 12 weeks from the time you submit the application to the time you receive the passport.

What you can do is schedule an appointment at a regional agency so you can follow up in person. Your appointment date must be within 3 business days before your travel date. Please bring proof of your upcoming trip to your appointment.

Panicked

Question: Hello,

On the 22nd of May, I applied to have my passport expedited at an acceptance agency in Atlanta. On the 27th of May, my application reached the New Hampshire agency and since then it's been sitting in process.

I tried to get an appointment last week because I'm traveling due to an illness in my family and was supposed to fly out on the 24th. Since my application is in New Hampshire I was told I would need to a) get an appointment in New Hampshire or cancel my application and try to get an appointment in Atlanta. Which is impossible since New Hampshire has my only original passport.

Now my children's grandfather has passed away and is being buried next week and I'm still looking at an "in process" update. I read that the Department of State is committed to processing expedited passports in 20 business days (which is today) is this correct? Should I be hoping to see some movement in my status today?

Also, the website is now saying that passports may take up to 6 weeks to be delivered does that include applications that paid the additional $17.65 for 1-2 day delivery because I have.

Answer: We're sorry to learn about your loss.

You should be able to make an appointment at any regional agency, especially because you are traveling due to a life or death emergency. You can call for an appointment again at 1-877-487-2778 or 202-647-4000 if you're calling after hours.

Passport services is committed to processing expedite requests in 4 to 6 weeks upon receipt of the application. Once your passport is issued, it will be express mailed to you since you paid for 1-2 days delivery.

Expedited service
by: Anonymous

Question: I applied for a passport and paid for expedited service on May 20th, great. My trip is on August 16th, also great. While I submitted my documents I asked the person checking my documents if my passport would come on time. She told me it would come 2 weeks early since you're paying for faster service. Also great.

But, why is my passport NOW getting processed and it is almost July? That was near 6 weeks instead of the promised 4 weeks. I leave in exactly 7 weeks and who knows when it'll get here.

My question is, can I call and pay for 1-2 delivery?

Answer: Expedited processing can take up to 12 weeks from the time you submitted to the time the passport arrives. Your passport should arrive the week of your trip at the latest but there's no guarantee.

You may contact passport services at 1-877-487-2778 about express delivery.

Question: I sent in an application for a new passport. I did express shipping to them, expedited service, and express service coming back to me. I sent in my application on June 4 they received it on June 5. Finally saying in process June 24. Why so long. I am traveling on July 10. Will I get it in time?

Answer: Expedited service may take up to 12 weeks -- 6 weeks processing and 6 weeks mailing on the front and back end. Mailing delays have severely impacted turnaround times so you made a great call paying for express delivery.

What you can do as backup in case your passport does not arrive is schedule an appointment at a regional agency. Your appointment date must be no sooner than July 7th. Please bring proof of your imminent international travel to your appointment.

Appointments are extremely limited so you may have to try several times in the next several days to secure one.

Passport wait time December 2020
by: Ruben

Question: I applied for my son's passport in December 2020. They asked for a new passport photo March 2021 and it says received March 31, 2021. The line is always busy and can’t get through to anyone. I emailed them and they said they can’t give me info unless I call. I wonder if I can go to Houston, as it says no online appts available and no walk-ins. I wonder if they’ll take me and I wonder if his mom would have to be present since we already signed the documents before. The process is very frustrating with their long wait times. I didn’t expedite it since I ordered the passport in December of 2020 and want to travel in 2021.

Answer: Unfortunately, you need an appointment in order to be entertained at the Houston Passport Agency. You also need to present proof of imminent international travel as your appointment date must be no sooner than 3 business days before your travel date.

There will be no need for both parents and the child to be there at the appointment but you need to pay the expedite fee.

Answer: Schedule an appointment at a regional passport agency so you can follow up in person. Your appointment must be 3 business days before your travel date.

Question: Hello. I submitted my passport application on 4/28. I got an email earlier in June saying it had not been RECEIVED until 6/7, nearly 5 weeks since I applied. These 5 weeks is absolutely ridiculous and has severely delayed everything else.

I paid for expedited processing AND 1-2 delivery, but I’m still worried it won’t be here in time. I am furious that it took this long and I have waited on hold for 4 hours or more multiple times with no help at all.

If I have to drive out of state to a passport agency (there are none in Ohio) and pay $600 for ANOTHER passport, I’m going to be livid. My trip is paid for and non-refundable. I leave on 7/15. Someone please help!! I need answers.

Answer: According to the Department of State's website, it takes about 6 weeks for an application to be received at a processing center and be entered into the tracking system. The 5-week period between submission and receipt at the processing center is within the normal time frame.

Expedited service may take up to 12 weeks (4 to 6 weeks processing and 6 weeks mailing on the front and back end). It is possible that your passport will arrive before your scheduled date but we cannot guarantee this.

Should you ever need to follow up in person at a regional agency, there will be no need to pay the fees again. Just make sure that you have an appointment and that you bring proof of your upcoming trip. Also, your appointment date must be within 3 business days of your travel date.

Question: I live in Chicago. I submitted my passport application on 5/20 and paid for every fast service. My lady and I did it together and our trip is coming up for our wedding on 7/15. I keep calling that number on the website but no one answers. What should or can I do? Please help.

Answer: Expedited service takes up to 12 weeks (4 to 6 weeks processing plus up to 6 weeks mailing). It is possible that your passports will arrive before your travel date but assurances cannot be made.

You can schedule an appointment at a regional agency in case it does not arrive a week before you trip. Please make sure that your appointment date is within 3 business days of your scheduled departure.

We ran into a similar pickle. Ordered the passport with plenty of lead time but it never came. Three days before our trip we didn’t realize we had any resources (tried to call the main Passport Office but it was always busy and we could never get through) and the Seattle passport office said that they were not taking walk-ins and you had to have an appointment but none were available.

But I did find out that they were indeed open and because our passport was in process and we were less than three days out from our trip they expedited things and we had a passport created there within a few hours!

Question: I have been calling countless times and trying online to make an appointment. It says none is available to contact them on the phone and their phone line is just a busy signal and doesn't even ring.

I have been trying for months now, so my baby's father can finally meet our son. I can't just mail them in because I have 2 babies, a 1-year-old and a 4-month-old. It states I need to apply in person but how can I if I can't make an appointment? I even tried emailing but got an automated email response.

Answer: You do not need to make an appointment at a regional agency if you are not traveling urgently. You may go to a local acceptance facility with your children to submit their passport applications.

Acceptance facilities can be a post office, library, courthouse, or government office. Most require an appointment but there are plenty of locations especially in major cities.

Requested Expedited Service/ Overnight Shipping
by: Nicholas S

Question: Hello, I requested overnight shipping as well as Expedited Service for my passport. My trip is July 3rd and I still do not have any update. The online portal for the regional agencies is not allowing any appointments to be scheduled. How do I go about traveling? Also am I able to add the overnight mail service if the post office did add it like they said they would?

Answer: Hi, Nicholas. At this point, your only course of action is to schedule an appointment at a regional agency. Please make sure that the date you are setting up an appointment for is no sooner than 3 business days before your scheduled departure.

Appointments are extremely limited but cancellations may happen at anytime. You might chance upon a slot if you keep trying during different times of the day.

If you receive your passport before your appointment date, please cancel it so others will get a chance to secure a slot.

Question: I submitted my expedited passport application at an acceptance facility (post office) on June 2 and June 4 (two separate apps for each of my daughters). The status for both online reflects IN PROCESS since June 6 and June 9. Both checks have been cashed.

My trip is on July 20. I also paid the extra fee for the 1-2 day passport delivery for both apps. What can I do to rush this? I cannot get through to the phone number, there's always a busy signal. The timeline now says up to 12 weeks for expedited processing and I was told 4-6 weeks at the time of submitting the apps. I am so stressed out because I am afraid I won't receive them on time.

Answer: Hi, Carmen. Processing still takes 4 to 6 weeks. The Department of State just clarified that that period does not include mailing on the front and back end which may take up to 6 weeks.

It is possible that the passports will arrive on time but there are no guarantees. You can schedule an appointment at a regional agency if the passports do not arrive a week before your trip. The appointment must be scheduled for 3 days before your travel date.

Question: I applied for a passport on 5/15. My application was received on 5/18 and payment was processed. I paid for expedited processing. I'm traveling internationally on 7/9 and I'm starting to worry I won't get my passport on time.

Answer: The Department of State has recently clarified that expedited service may take up to 12 weeks -- 6 weeks for processing and another 6 for mailing on the front and back end. While it is possible that your passport will still arrive before your trip, there are no guarantees.

What you can do is schedule an appointment at a regional passport agency so you can follow up in person in case your passport does not arrive. Your appointment date must be no sooner than July 6 (3 business days before your travel date).

In case your passport arrives before July 6th, please cancel your appointment to give way to others trying to secure one. Apppointments are extremely limited at present and you may not be able to secure one on your first few attempts.

Closed during office hours
by: Tan

Question: I called on Friday at 7 pm eastern time. The automatic message advised that no representative is available as I am calling during off-hours. I thought the office hours are Monday to Friday from 8 am to 10 pm eastern time. Might be this the reason there are 4-5 hours waiting time to talk to a representative?

Answer: The Department of State's website still indicates that NPIC call center hours are from 8 AM to 10 PM eastern time. This a fairly new change; it was 8 AM to 5 PM until recently.

It is possible that the automatic messaging system has not been updated yet. The call center is receiving a large volume of calls and unfotunately, not all calls can be answered.

I cannot obtain a visa until I have my passport. The check was cashed from my bank on 6/2 and it had already said in process on 5/23. It has gone back and forth from saying "not available" as if they never even received it at all yet. It says in process one day and not available the very same to the next day.

It has been totally random. I have very important plans with my fiance and I need my passport by 6/28 actually before then because as I said I still need to obtain a visa as well.

I am panicking badly and I don't know what to do. Please someone tell me what to do. This is a horrible feeling of being completely powerless in my situation.

P.S. I have called the passport agency over a hundred times and I ALWAYS get a busy signal. How can I do anything or talk to anyone about it when all I ever get is a busy signal. Totally overwhelming.

Answer: Hi, Tawnie. The only place that can issue a passport in the time you require is a regional passport agency. These places strictly require an appointment and appointments are extremely limited presently.

Question: Thanks for the response to my last question. Do they try their best to get passports out by departure date? My passport was in process in May before the recent updates. Also, I see that you are recommending calling to schedule an appointment with an agency, but that is impossible. I have been told twice this week there are no appointments available. Is there still a possibility that I can receive my passport on time. Two weeks from travel date and 4 weeks into my expediting processing time.

Answer: Passport services do take your travel dates into consideration but they cannot guarantee that your passport will be issued based on said date.

Calling the toll-free number is another way to secure an appointment but customer service representatives do not have access to an alternate reservation system. They can only assist with the process but if no appointments are available, there is nothing they can do to.

It is still possible that your passport will arrive before your scheduled departure date but there are no guarantees.

HELP PLEASE

Question: I live outside Nashville. I applied for my Passport (1st time) at the Post Office on 04/14. I checked this week for the status and the message said they received my application on 05/14 and it could take 10 weeks. The post office employee told me it would take 10 weeks from the application date. I am due to travel on 07/16. I am very nervous and do not know what to do, please can someone advise me?

Answer: The State Department has clarified that the published processing timeframes do not include mailing time. So for routine service, it may take up 18 weeks -- 12 weeks for processing and up to 6 weeks for mailing time on the front and back end. Mailing times vary and may be significantly delayed.

What you can do is set up an appointment at a regional agency for 3 business days before your scheduled trip. They can issue your passport in 72 hours as long as all your requirements are complete and you pay for expedited service.

As appointments are very hard to come by, you may have to try several times over several days before you can secure one. You can also call passport services at 1-877-487-2778 but note that agents do not have access to an alternate reservation system.

16 weeks since filing

Question: My daughter's passport started processing 16 weeks ago. I got a letter stating they need an affidavit which I had already sent. I sent another one. It’s been over 12 weeks since they received that back. Her passport is still in processing. I’ve called several times and they continue to tell me all I can do is wait. This is ridiculous!! What can be done?

Answer: Based on the latest update by the State Department, routine service can take up to 18 weeks. The 18-week timeframe includes up to 12 weeks for processing and up to 6 weeks for mailing times on the front and back end. Delays can also be expected if additional documents are required.

If you are not traveling soon, there's is nothing you can do but wait. If you have urgent travel scheduled, you may go to a regional agency to get the passport issued in 72 hours or less.

Regional agencies require appointments and your appointment date must be no sooner than 3 business days before your scheduled departure.

Question: My boyfriend and I both went and sent in our applications at the same time, they received it 4/16. At the time, they were still working on 4-6 weeks expedited which is what we paid for. He got his passport back last month and I still do not have mine. They sent me a letter last month about my picture so I sent all my corrected info back in expedited mail so they received it the next day. I got notice that they received it but my passport is still in process.

Now when I call they say they are working on 10 weeks expedited but they’ve had my stuff since April. My trip is coming up and I don’t know what to do at this point.

Answer: You may go to a regional agency to get your passport issued within 72 hours. Regional agencies strictly require appointments.

Question: I have applied for my son's passport 5/10 and I paid $60 for expedited service. The tracking number shows the application has been delivered on 5/13. We have our trip booked for 7/13 and the all family is going and I can’t go without my son.

I really don’t know what to do. When I checked my application status it says Not Available. I have called so many times but no one is able to give me a status update on my son's application they said it has not been scanned yet so they don’t see anything on the system. They just keep telling
me to wait. We have a visa appointment on 7/2. I'm having anxiety. I really don’t know what to do. Help please.

Answer: Hello, Sylla. Since you also require a visa to travel, you need to schedule an appointment at a regional agency to get the passport on time. The Department of State requires that your appointment date be no sooner than 10 business days of your international travel. This means your appointment date must be on June 30th. You should be issued a passport in time for your visa appointment.

Urgent-have not received passport

Question: Hi, I applied for renewal with name change 5/14, expedite service, and extra 1-2 day shipping. The system shows in process as of 5/19 and I have been told that it has been received at the processing center. It’s now June 17th and I have not received it yet. I travel to Mexico for a wedding on July 1st. Will I receive my passport on time?

Answer: We cannot guarantee that you will receive your passport on time since we do not have access to the government's data. The State Department has recently clarified that expedited service MAY take up to 12 weeks door to door. Actual processing takes 4 to 6 weeks and mailing may take up to another 6 weeks, depending on the courier.

Question: I sent my application for passport renewal on 5/14 and it was received on 5/19. The status says that it is processing. I requested expedited service. My status still staying 4-6 weeks to receive my passport, but I see that the updates say up to 12 weeks for expedited service now. My trip is scheduled for July 4th. I am worried that I am not going to get my passport on time. Does the new 10-12-week processing apply to me? What should I now? I called several times and can’t get through. Please help.

Answer: The 12-week approximate turnaround time for expedited service is applicable to all applications. The State Department has just posted the clarification but it has always been the case. -- processing takes 4 to 6 weeks and mailing may take another couple of weeks.

Your only hope at this point is a regional agency. Regional agencies issue passports to individuals who are traveling overseas urgently. They give priority to those who need to travel due to a qualified life-or-death emergency but some agencies may also cater to those traveling for other reasons. Appointments are strictly required.

Schedule an appointment for no sooner than June 30th. Since appointments are extremely limited, you may have to try several times before you can secure a slot.

That’s so awesome Val that makes me feel a smidge better because my submission date was 5/14 and US state Dept received date was 5/21. I leave for my trip on 6/30 so I’ve been panicking because I really only have next week and now they are saying 10 week process time so I’m stoked to see an update that you got your sons that was submitted around the same dates as mine. Hopefully I have the same good luck! Thanks for your update!

Question: I submitted my expedited passport application at an acceptance facility on 5/14. The status online reflects in process since 5/21. I have my trip booked to fly out early morning on 6/30. I paid the extra fee for the 1-2 day passport delivery.

What date does the actual processing go off the date I submitted or the date they showed it in process. The lady at the passport office told me yesterday they just updated the processing times to 10 weeks for expedited (6 weeks for processing and 4 weeks for mailing).

Tomorrow will be 5 weeks since I submitted my application and my local regional office has no available appointments prior to my trip. Is there any possibility I would receive my passport by 6/29?

Answer: Hi, Tiffany. We do not have access to the government's data so we cannot tell you exactly when the processing of your application began and if your passport will arrive on time. It is possible but guarantees cannot be made.

According to the Department of State's website, expedited processing may take up to 10 weeks from the day the application is submitted to the day a new passport is received. The 10-week timeframe includes up to 6 weeks processing and 4 weeks mailing on the front and back end.

Question: I paid for expedited renewal and when I check, online passport status it says the same every time.
They received it on March 4 now it's June 16. It's been 15 weeks. I call and they say it's processing. I feel like they don't want to give me my passport. It's not denied, just ignored. I am very worried. I have already spoken to a supervisor and he said it's still processing. If there was a problem, I think they should tell me.

Answer: If there was an issue with your passport application, you would have received a letter from the Department of State. Please double-check you mail from the past several weeks.

Expedited service MAY take up to 10 weeks from the time the application is submitted to the day it is delivered to your address. Delays may occur if additional documentation is required.

Question: I received an email on May 1 stating that my application was received. I received another email requesting for more documents. They received my document on June 9. Now it says my passport status is "in process". I leave for my trip June 27. I also paid for my passport to be expedited. I would like to know what are my options.

Answer: It is still possible that your passport will arrive before your travel date. As insurance, you can schedule an appointment for June 23 at a regional passport agency so you can follow up in person.

Regional agencies can issue passports in 72 hours or less but appointments are scarce at this time. Most applicants have had to try several days over several days to secure one.

Question: I applied for my son's expedited passport on 5/13 and The U.S. Department of State received it on 5/19. Today is 6/16 and I travel on 6/18. I have called 4 times and waited over 3 hours for reps to tell me it’s "processing" the same thing I see online. They put in notes of my date of travel but can’t tell me anything else. Is it even realistic at this point to receive my sons passport on time???

Answer: Based on your submission date, your application is on its fifth week of processing. Expedited service takes approximately 4 to 6 weeks.

Customer service representatives only have access to the same tracking information available online. At this point, the it is still possible that the passport will arrive but guarantees cannot be made.

Still haven’t received passport

Question: I applied for my 3 children's passports March 19 and still haven’t received them. My travel date is July 3rd. I did not expedite because I was told by the post office that they would be here on time.

I’m very nervous that I will not receive them on time. It’s now almost 12 weeks that I applied. I need help. I can’t fly without my children to another country. My trip is paid for. I can’t make an appointment online. It keeps saying no appointment available. What is the holdup? Can someone please help me?

Answer: Routine service takes approximately 10 to 12 weeks. Based on your submission date, it has been over 12 weeks. It is possible that passport services has reached out to you asking for more documents to support the applications. Please double-check your mail for any letters from the State Department.

At this point, your only course of action is to set an appointment at a regional passport agency so you can follow up in person. Appointments at regional agencies are extremely limited; most applicants have had to try several times over several days to secure one.

Appointments must be no sooner than 3 business days of the applicant's date of travel. In your case, you should make an appointment for June 30th.

Passport delay
by: Anonymous

Question: A friend of mine is traveling outside the country. Her first passport application is delayed and her trip is in a few days. Can she travel with her original passport? Her husband is going to follow her and take the US passport to use it when she's coming back?

Answer: As a U.S. citizen, your friend is required to depart the United States with a valid U.S. passport. She cannot leave the country with a foreign passport and re-enter with a U.S. passport.

With just a few days before her travel date, the only place that can issue her passport is a regional agency. She needs to set an appointment for 3 days before her flight and go to the agency in person to follow up. If she has not paid for expedited service, she also needs to pay the $60 expedite fee.

Appointments at regional agencies are extremely limited; your friend may not be able to secure one on her first try. She may also call customer service at 1-877-487-2778 for assistance.

Question: I have applied for my passport on 4/27 and it shows that the passport agency has received my application on 5/12, and it’s "in process".

I have paid for expedited service and express mail. It has been more than 20 days and it’s been 7 weeks since I have applied. I called many times and got no help! They told me to just wait but I will be traveling on June 21st early morning.

Please help! I have been trying to make an appointment as well but no luck! What can I do?

Answer: Unfortunately, there is nothing else you can do but wait and schedule an appointment at an agency.

Since it has been over the 6-week expedite period, it is possible that your passport is already on its way. But for good measure, you can schedule an appointment at a regional agency so you can followup in person.

Appointments are extremely limited but cancellations happen at any time. Try several times during different times during the day. It is possible that someone would cancel at the same time that you're trying to get an appointment.

Question: I sent my passport for a renewal and it got there 4/23 I did a routine service and no updates are available as of now. I've called the National Passport Information center numerous times and every time they keep hanging up on me. I travel next month.

Answer: Routine service takes approximately 10 to 12 weeks. It has been 8 weeks since the application was received. It is possible that passport services has sent you a letter asking for more information/documents. Kindly check your mail for that.

It is also possible that your application is already in process but the online status has not been updated yet. We have no way of knowing for sure because we do not have access to the government's data.

You need to speak to a customer service supervisor to get a better idea of what may be going on. Customer service representatives are available Mondays through Fridays 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Lines are very busy so you have to try several times to get through.

waiting for renewal passports & traveling next week
by: Anonymous

Question: Hi. My family and I are hoping to travel next Saturday. However, my children's passports still not have arrived.

When I filled out all the forms it was on 4/27 and it is a renewal. When I filled out the renewal application the postal service did not collect my children's almost expired passports so therefore I received a letter on 6/1 that they needed the passports. I sent my children passports and had them expedited again.

I am so worried that their passports will not come in on time. I am currently on the phone on hold 2+ hours still waiting to speak to someone. What can I do? Please help!!

Answer: Passports issued to minors cannot be renewed. If you submitted renewal forms instead of Form DS-11, that may have been the issue. You need to clarify this with passport services.

When you get ahold of a representative, also try to set an appointment at a regional agency. Your appointment date must be within 3 days of your scheduled flight out of the country.

Will it come

Question: I am leaving on vacation on June 26. I got expedited service and it says my passport was received on May 15. Will it come in time.?

Answer: Passport services' expedited service commitment is to process your passport application within 20 business days from the date your application is received at a passport agency or center. Twenty days from May 15 is June 4 so your passport should already be on its way.

You may contact passport services at 1-877-487-2778 to confirm the status of your application.

Question: My son is traveling on 6/19 but did not pay to have his passport sooner. What should he do?

Answer: You son must set an appointment at a regional agency ASAP. He may schedule an appointment online or call 1-877-487-2778. Since appointments are very limited, he may not be able to get one on the first try. He needs to keep trying during different times of the day.

Question: I ordered passports for my family for a trip on 6/19. My son's passport has not arrived. We paid for expedited services and it arrived at the Charleston center on 5/5. What can/should I do. If we don't get his passport we will lose the money we spent on our vacation.

Answer: You may schedule an appointment at a regional passport agency for June 16 (cannot be earlier than that). A regional agency will be able to issue the passport provided there are no missing requirements.

Appointments at regional agencies are extremely limited -- you may have to try several times during the day before you can chance upon one. The system usually comes up with no available appointments but cancellations may happen at any time. If you keep trying, you may just chance upon that slot.

Question: I am traveling with my daughters on 6/24. I paid for expedited services and the online service noted all 3 of our passports are received on 5/7.

I received my passport 3 weeks ago. My daughters' passport applications still state "in process". I tried to get an in-person appointment via online which states nothing available. I then call the 877 number stayed on hold for 3 1/2 hours and can't get through.

What other options do I have?

Answer: Unfortunately, there are no other options at this time.

Your appointment date must be no sooner than 3 business days before your trip. That is June 21st. Appointments are extremely limited but cancellations may happen at any time so you may still be able to chance on a slot. You still have a week to try and set an appointment.

If you are traveling due to a qualified life-or-death emergency, you need to call 1-877-487-2778 for an appointment. They will prioritize you as long as you can provide proof of the emergency.

If you are traveling urgently for reasons other than a life-or-death emergency you have to go online to set the appointment.

Question: I ordered my passport on April 21st. My travel date is June 14th. It is currently Friday of June 10th. And most likely I will miss my flight. I never received any additional letter asking for more information. I called the national passport services and they gave me the same information as my online status. What are the possible reasons for the delay???

Answer: We do not have access to the government's data so we cannot tell you what is causing the delay in your passport's issuance and delivery. You need to contact the NPIC for the information you require.

Since it has been over 6 weeks since submission, you may request for a refund of the expedite fee.

Application not available

Question: I applied for a new expedited passport on 05/14, and the status says "Not Available". My trip is on 06/27. I'm very scared that I won't get it on time, and to make an appointment with an agency nearby is hard. What should I do in this case? I already paid for fast delivery too. Thanks.

Answer: Expedited service takes approximately 4 to 6 weeks. Six weeks from May 14 is June 25 so your application is still well within the expedited processing period.

According to the Department of State's website, it takes about 4 weeks for an application to register as 'In Process' in the tracking system. During these 4 weeks, your application is delivered to a mail facility, your payment is processed, and your application is scanned and sent to the processing center.

For good measure, you may schedule an appointment at a regional passport agency. Your appointment date must be no sooner than 3 business days before your flight so that's June 23. You may have to try several times at different times during the day before you can secure a slot. If one location does not have an appointment available, you can try an agency located in a nearby city or state.

Expedited passport advice
by: Julie

Question: Hi! We had an appointment at the post office for my daughter on 5/4. Her passport shows "in process" and was received 5/12. She is leaving for Israel next week - and I don't know what to do. We paid for express shipping and expedited processing. I have been trying nonstop to get an appointment at the NYC passport office with no luck.

Answer: Hi, Julie. Your application s still within the 4 to 6 weeks expedited processing period. The passport may still arrive in time.

Having said that, it is still a good idea to schedule an appointment at an agency in case the passport does not arrive. Your appointment must be no sooner than 3 business days before your daughter's travel date. If you cannot get an appointment in the NY agency, you may have to try others in nearby states.

Is the 4 weeks processing in addition to expedited service?
by: Anonymous

Question: Hello. I applied for passport renewal and shipped my passport today (Jun9) via priority mail express 2 days. I also paid for the expedited service and the 1-2 day return passport mailing fee.

The website is saying 4 weeks processing, but the expedited service says 4-6 weeks processing. My question is, is this initial 4 weeks IN ADDITION to the 4-6 weeks or will they try to prioritize my expedited passport when it arrives by (hopefully) Friday so that I'll receive it in 6 weeks' time? I'm traveling in early August and am wondering if I should plan for it to come in enough time for me to be able to make my trip.

Thanks!

Answer: Since you paid for expedited service, you will receive your passport in approximately 4 to 6 weeks. Six weeks from June 9 is July 21 so you can expect your passport to arrive around that date.

You may track the status of your application here: http://uspsg.net/status/. If at first it does not yield any results, don't panic. The Department of State says that it takes about 4 weeks for an application to appear as 'in process' in the tracking system.

Upcoming important trip
by: Anonymous

Question: I applied for my son's passport on 05/06 and even though I paid the expedite fee, it looks like that only applies to the return of the passport to me which is unbelievable.

It took 6 days to get to the agency which means that I already lost a week right there. Shouldn’t that apply to both ways getting the passport to the agency and back to us as a part of expedite service?

This is a rip-off on your end. Long story short. It’s been 4 weeks as of today and the status online says in progress. My trip to Europe to see my sick mom is scheduled for next week July 19th.
I tried calling and scheduling an appointment at the nearest Passport location which in my case is in San Francisco to get a passport but it says no appointments at this time.

My mom is sick and she is supposed to have surgery on the 19th. I really need to leave on that date. Please advise. I’m still 10 days away from the trip but I worrying that I won’t be able to get to my mom on time. I know you are not supposed to show up without an appointment but I’m losing my head here, not sure what to do. If I have to, I can ask my mom's doctor to send me some documents to show as proof. Please advise.

Answer: The expedited processing period of approximately 4 to 6 weeks actually is actually counted from the day you submit the application to the day the passport arrives on your doorstep. During this period, you MIGHT receive a letter requesting more information in the mail. If you did not receive your passport or a letter requesting more information in this time period, you can request a refund of the $60 expedited service fee.

We are a privately-owned website so we cannot tell you exactly what is happening to your application. Based on your submission date, you are at the end of the 5th week of processing. It is still likely that the passport will arrive before your scheduled trip.

Individuals who need to travel urgently due to a life-or-death emergency are prioritized. You can secure a document signed by your mother's physician explaining her medical condition. You may then contact the NPIC at 1-877-487-2778 for an appointment. Customer service representatives are available Mondays through Fridays 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Let them know that you are traveling because of an emergency; they will schedule an appointment for you.

We sincerely hope that you get your passport in time and that your mother recovers quickly. Have a safe trip!

Misrepresentation
by: Anonymous

Question: Stop strongly advising people to book after receiving their passport, and resolve the issue of saying you will get your expedited passport in 4-6 weeks, which is obviously a lie.

Answer: Published processing times are approximations and actual processing depends on various factors including the volume of applications received at the processing center and available manpower. Since we are a privately-owned website, we cannot tell you what exactly causes these delays.

You may lodge a formal complaint or send your suggestions to the Department of State.

Question: Sent in my passport renewal around April 14. Started to get worried the other day, June 3, that we have not heard anything. I did not pay the additional $60 for expedited service.

After researching further, I realized that the 10-12 weeks did not include the 4 weeks before it began processing. It has been "processing" since May 15 and we leave June 19. The Chicago Regional Office is booked. Do I have any options?

Answer: Unfortunately, no other place but a regional agency can issue a passport before your travel date. If the Chicago Agency is booked, you may can try an agency in a nearby state.

Appointment for Chicago Agency
by: Anonymous

Question: I applied for my passport on 4/28 and received a letter to send the correct birth certificate on 6/1. I expedited the shipping for the document morning of 6/2. It still says processing. I have called and spoke to 5 people and 1 officer.

All have said the same thing. "You can not schedule an appointment at the Chicago agency because it is booked until 6/21" My trip starts on 6/15 in 7 days!! I have made this detail noted when calling but no one seems to care.

When arriving at the agency in person today out of desperation, I have been told to call senator Dick Durbin by the front door security after explaining myself urgently no one will give me an appointment. She grinned with an ominous chuckle and laughed, "good luck" was all the guidance I received. This can not be the standard.

Answer: We're sorry to learn about your situation. Unfortunately, there is hardly anyone can do about your application since all slots at the agency are booked. Also, applicants who need to travel due to a qualified life-or-death emergency are prioritized.

Should you need to cancel and rebook your trip, we strongly advise you to wait until you have your passport to avoid the same issue.

Question: I applied for my child’s passport on 05/06. I got an email on 05/12 stating that the application was in process. We’re now in the fifth week should I expect to get his passport by next week?

Answer: If you paid for expedited service, you should expect the passport to arrive within the coming week. If you did not, the processing should be complete by the end of July.

Question: I have applied for passport renewal for my daughter since March 29, and now it's June 8 and I have not received it yet. We are traveling on June 20th. What can I do in this case?

Answer: If you did not apply for expedited service, the application is still well within the 10 to 12-week processing time. It may still be processing.

Status of my passport
by: Anonymous

Question: My parents applied for a US passport for me, and I was told to resend a better picture by someone at the passport office. I sent the new picture 5/24 to the instructed passport center. I tracked the US mail, which indicated that the mail was received on 5/25. We plan to travel out of the country on 6/18. Please advise me on what to do.
Thanks.

Answer: We deleted the tracking number for your security. You may check the status of your application here: http://uspsg.net/status/

Please note that routine service takes 10 to 12 weeks to complete. If you did not request expedited service and you applied in May, the passport should arrive by the end of July or mid-August. If you paid for expedited service, you should expect the passport to arrive by the end of June.

Since you are traveling on the 18th, the only way you can get your passport is to follow up in person at regional passport agency. Agencies require an appointment and these can be very hard to secure these days.

Set an Appointment

Your appointment must be NO SOONER than June 15th. Please bring proof of your imminent travel when you go to your appointment. If you have not paid for expedited service, bring a check for $60 as well.

Didn't get an expedited service and need to fly tomorrow
by: Anonymous

Question: Hello, we ordered a passport for my son 6 weeks ago via expedited processing and it's "in process" status since May 12 2021.
We are flying internationally on June 9 and the whole family would have to cancel tickets because of one passport delay.

I called the US Passport service 3 times. Last week they told me that I should get the passport on time just before the flight since we put date of the flight and paid for expedited delivery. Today I called and they are failing to provide any status. They said the only way to get a passport is to book an appointment with the passport agency which I was trying to do in the past 2 weeks as well. Desperately we drove to the nearby passport agency with our son and they turned us around.

The most frustrating thing is that no one can provide any ETA, any status. We can't change tickets because we don't know when we can expect a passport. Canceling this trip for the entire family is very expensive. Is there any way to get this resolved? I just can't believe that such things became normal in this country.

Answer: We're sorry to learn about your situation. It is indeed frustrating to have to cancel an entire trip because of passport processing delays. Unfortunately, there is nothing anyone can do to help. The only way to get the passport quickly is at a regional agency which you have already attempted.

You may request for a refund of the expedite fee since it has been over 6 weeks and you have not received the passport.

Question: I purchased a passport for my daughter on April 19 and I had it expedited. They just cashed the check on June 4. We travel on June 23. Will we receive her passport in time?

Answer: The passport should have arrived by the end of May since you paid for expedited service. Please contact passport services at 1-877-487-2778 regarding your application. Also, you may request for a refund of the $60 since it has been over 6 weeks.

I haven’t got my passport and I leave the country in 7 days. What do I do at this time?
by: Anonymous

Question: I applied for my passport in early April. I went to check the status and it says it was reviewed on 5/13. I’m supposed to leave the country on June 10th which is a week away and my application still says "In Process". What can I do to make sure it comes on time? Will paying the expedited fee allow it to come on time? Is there any other way I can get my passport within this time?

Answer: Routine service takes 10 to 12 weeks. You need to request expedited service in order to get the passport in time for your trip.

The only place that can issue a passport in the time you require is a regional passport agency. Agencies require an appointment.

Schedule an Appointment

Your appointment date must not be sooner than 3 days before your trip. You may have to try several times before you can secure an appointment. Regional agencies offer extremely limited in-person appointments and prioritize applicants who need to travel due to a qualified life-or-death emergency. Don't forget to bring a copy of your airline tickets to your appointment as proof of imminent travel.

Question: Hello, I applied for my passport on April 27, 2021. I have plans to travel out of the country on June 10, 2021, in seven days, and have not received my passport yet. I am starting to get a little worried and do not know what to do at this time.

I understand it takes up to 4-6 weeks for my documents to be reviewed but is there any way I can pay an additional fee to get my passport fast once it gets approved. If so, who do I need to call or where do I need to go to do so?

Answer: Since you already paid for expedited service, there is no other fee you can pay to speed up the processing. What you can do is schedule an appointment at a regional agency to followup in person.

Your appointment date must be 3 business days before your scheduled flight. Please bring proof of your imminent international travel when you go to your appointment.

Question: I applied for my passport and paid for it to be expedited in the first or second week of April. I received an email on 05/12 saying that my documents are in process. My international flight to Mexico is on 06/2021. What do I do? There are no available appointments at the embassy near me and I am checking daily.

Answer: I am assuming that you applied for a foreign passport because you mentioned 'embassy'. If this is the case, please contact the embassy you applied at to find out what you need to do.

New infant passport delays
by: Anonymous

Question: Five weeks ago I submitted an expedited application for my infant (1st passport) at a USPS facility. It was mistakenly sent by regular mail, so I do not have a tracking number, and its status is still showing as Not Available. The passport agent I spoke to did not have answers. We travel in 4 weeks. What is the longest it could take to show as In Process? Will it still be processed as expedited? In this case, if we need to do a 72-hour rush do I need to order a new birth certificate or is a photocopy ok?

Answer: The latest update on the Department of State's website says it takes about 4 weeks for an application to appear as 'in process' in the tracking system. Since your application was sent via regular mail, there may be some delays.

The application will still be processed as an expedited service. If it does not arrive a week before your trip, you may schedule an appointment 72 hours before your flight date. There will be no need to resubmit requirements; all you need to bring is proof of imminent international travel.

Answer: If you meant you did not pay for expedited service, then yes, you may go to a regional agency. Your appointment date must be 72 hours before your trip. Please bring proof of your imminent travel like airline tickets booked in the children's names.

I expedited my son passport and it’s been 6 weeks
by: Anonymous

Question: My son's passport has been expedited for 6 weeks processing but I still haven’t received it. His dad signed a consent form for him to get his passport.

When I call the call center, I waited on the phone for 3 hours before I was able to talk to someone. They tell me 3 different things when I spoke to three different people on different occasions.

One told me a letter was send out to me on 05/20 and it also emailed to me. I did not receive anything. He then told me to write to the passport center asking them to resend it.

The second representative told me that the letter that was sent out to me was returned to them because of some issue with the address I don’t understand. Then he said they resend me a new letter yesterday 05/28.

The third rep told me he doesn’t know what the other two talking about. He doesn’t see any letter and it’s still in process.

I’m in Brooklyn I was trying to see if I can go to a passport agency but these agencies are only going by appointment and it was to be 72 hours and it has to be life or death like u have to have a death certificate to send up.

I don’t know what to do, my trip is in 4 weeks. I don’t want it to be a last-minute thing and there's no time for me to get this fixed. I’m worried and I’m not getting help.

If there is an issue I like to know what it is because I wouldn’t be able to fix my son's passport if I don’t know what’s going on.

Please, any suggestions, any help?

Answer: We are a privately-run website so we cannot tell you exactly what is going on with the application. We do not have access to the government's system.

It is highly possible that a document/requirement is missing, hence the delay. Passport services may have sent you a letter regarding the missing requirement, as what the first two agents you spoke to said. There may have been an issue with the address that's why you did not receive it.

Did you also submit a photocopy of the father's government-issued ID along with the notarized consent? If you did not, that may have been the issue.

I'm not sure why the third agent did not have the information available to the first two. Again, we do not know exactly what is going on, only the people at the National Passport Information Center do.

Processing times are just approximations and delays are to be expected if there are missing documents. Since you are leaving in 4 weeks, it is still very likely that the passport will arrive on time, provided that you get the issue with the requirements resolved ASAP.

Your last resort, in case it does not arrive a week before your trip, is to apply in person at a regional agency. As you already know, appointments at agencies are extremely limited. Priority is given to those in life-or-death emergencies but some non-emergency cases are also catered to.

Schedule an Appointment

Your appointment date must be 72 hours before your flight and you must bring proof of your imminent travel like your airline tickets.

We recommend that you contact passport services again at 1-877-487-2778. Asking to speak to a supervisor may get you better answers.

Leaving for Mexico in 12 days
by: Anonymous

Question: I applied for my boyfriend's and my passport on April 19th. I checked the status and it said it was received on April 28th. I paid for it to get expedited and for 1 to 2-day shipping.

I leave for Mexico on June 9th and the status still says processing. I called the 877-487-2778 number and I have been on hold for more than 2 hours and then it hangs up. I’m kinda getting frustrated.

Answer: Expedited service takes 4 to 6 weeks and the 6 weeks is not up yet. Your passports should arrive in the next several days.

Why can't I get anyone to help me?

Question: My family is scheduled for a trip on Monday the 24th. My granddaughter's passport is still not here. We paid for expedited and overnight and it has been more than 6 weeks. We called the status number no one is helping. Please tell me what to do? Help!

Answer: As a private company, we do not have access to the status of your application.

Check the Status Online

Once an application is submitted, private companies/couriers can no longer interfere. Your last resort is to apply in person at regional agency. Your appointment must be 3 days before your scheduled flight out of the country.

Set an Appointment

If the passport does not arrive in the next few days or you don't get it in person at the regional agency, you may request for a refund of the expedite fee.

You may call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778. Asking to speak to a supervisor may get you better answers.

Passport not available
by: Rebekah

Question: I sent in my passport application on April 19th. Today is May 19th and the status still says unavailable. I paid for expedited fees and the money order has not been cashed yet. I leave in exactly two weeks and all agencies are booked completely. Did it get lost? Who do I contact or how can I get it before I leave?

Answer: According to the latest update by the State Department, it takes about 4 weeks for an application to appear as "in process" in the tracking system. During this time, the application is received, the cheque is cashed and the processing starts. It is unlikely that your application was lost.

We recommend checking the status again in a few days. You may also contact the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 to followup. Ask to speak to a supervisor to get better answers.

Your last resort is to apply in person at a regional agency. Your appointment must be 3 business days before your scheduled trip. Appointments are extremely limited these days but cancellations may happen at any time so we recommend trying secure one regularly.

Passport Hasn't Arrived

Question: I applied for expedited service in April and they received my application on April 7th. It is now May 19th and I leave for Mexico on June 2nd. My application has been "processing" for 2 weeks now. What can I do? I am getting very nervous. Any info is appreciated!

Answer: Expedited renewals take approximately 4 to 6 weeks. Your application is currently on the 6th week. It should be in the mail soon.

You may contact the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 to followup.

Processing

Question: I have submitted my passport over 6 weeks ago. My status online still says not available but my money order has been cashed. How much longer should I wait for an update because when I called the center they said they couldn’t even find my passport in their system. I am concerned maybe my information was lost.

Answer: The Department of State's website states that it takes about 4 weeks for a passport to register as 'in process' on the tracking system. It is very likely that your application is already in process but has not yet been entered into the system hence the 'not available' status. Please note that agents only have access to the same information that you can see in the tracking system.

Another proof that your application has been received is the cheque having been cashed. Since it was made out to the U.S. Department of State, no one else could have cashed it.

We recommend checking the status again in a few days. If 12 weeks since submission pass and you still do not see any updates, you may file a non-receipt of your passport using Form DS-86.

If you would like to speak to someone regarding your concerns, you may contact passport services at 1-877-487-2778. Asking to speak to a supervisor may get you better answers.

Question: My husband submitted documents on March 3 for a passport. About two weeks later, they denied his application but wouldn’t say why. He submitted extra documents and we haven’t heard anything yet. Our Anniversary trip to Cancun is on May 19. Do the process start all over again? What should we do? I have my passport, but he still hasn’t received his. Please help!

Answer: Passport applications are not denied for no reason. The letter your received will have explained what documents are missing and what you need to do to resolve the issue. We recommend that you contact the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 for clarification.

My son passport still in process

Question: My son and I had our passport appointment in the post office on March 31st. I received mine back last week. But my son's passport is still in process and I paid for expedited service. We fly out of the country on May 12th. I don't know what to do.

Answer: Your son's passport is still within the expedited processing timeframe. It is still very likely that it will arrive before your scheduled flight.

My wife and I applied 12 weeks before our travel date
by: Anonymous

My wife and I applied for our passport 4 days apart and we are leaving in 12 weeks. She got her passport 4 weeks after we applied. We are supposed to be leaving in 4 days and I still haven't received my passport yet.

I'm freaking out so I made an appointment for 2 days before my travel date. I was told it's not a guarantee I would get my passport when I go in for my appointment.

And for those reading this trying to get an appointment best chance is to log in at midnight and try to get an appointment that's how I was able to do so.

Answer: Since you were able to secure an appointment, you will most likely get your passport issued unless there are issues with your documents. Make sure to bring proof of your imminent international travel when you go to your appointment.

Question: They received my passport application over a month ago and they still haven’t processed it. It’s April 19th and I leave for an out-of-country trip on May 29th. What do I do if I don’t get it soon?

Answer: Routine service takes 10 to 12 weeks. The Department of State has issued a statement that clarifies that it takes about 4 weeks for a passport application to appear as "in process" in the tracking system.

Please contact the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 to clarify the status of your application.

Passport renewal
by: Anonymous

Question: Hi! My passport renewal application was received on 11/27/2020 and has been "in-process" ever since. I leave on 2/22/2021 for vacation and haven’t received my passport yet. I understand it’s taking 10-12 weeks for normal processing, the 12 weeks will be on the 19th of February. Will I actually receive it within 10-12 weeks? I’m reading all these people saying they're not getting theirs in time. Thanks in advance.

Answer: The published processing times are only approximations. Actual processing times depend on the volume of applications and manpower availability. Processing times change as local conditions evolve. This is why the Department of State strongly recommends waiting until one is in possession of a valid passport before making any plans.

Also, USPS is facing an unprecedented volume of mail. As a result, there may be significant delays in the delivery of your new passport and supporting documents.

Having said that, there is still a chance that your passport will arrive before your scheduled trip. As a backup plan, you can secure an appointment at the closest regional agency for 72 hours before your flight. If you're able to secure a slot, you can followup in person and have the passport issued the same day or within 72 hours.

Been 9 weeks on expedited service
by: Anonymous

Question: I applied for my daughter's passport on 12/1 and it's been over 9 weeks. When I call them, they say they can't promise anything, but I need to wait until it arrives. I did apply for expedited service. Agencies are closed and I have an international trip coming soon. Customer service is of no help.

Are there any other means of trying to get the passport sooner?

Answer: There are no other means to get the passport processed sooner aside from going to a regional passport agency. I suggest you keep trying to secure an appointment. There may be cancellations then you can take that slot. Trying to get an appointment at a different agency may also help if the one closest to you is booked up or not yet in Phase 2.

Waiting for passport for 6months

Question: I applied for a passport in August 2020. Received a passport with the wrong DOB in November. I sent it back, they confirmed it was received but no further action is taken to process my passport with the right DOB.

I’ve been calling them every week, they have no answer where’s my passport. Spoke to a supervisor, no answer, just wait. Seriously, they did a mistake and cant mail the right one in 2 months. What should I do?

Answer: You may submit a formal complaint through the NPIC. Most of those who filed a formal complaint get better resolutions to their issues.

Question: I applied for my passport on October 29th by Expedite service. I was told to send in a new picture and I did by UPS. They have received the new picture but I leave on my trip on December 18th. That’s only 8 days away. The main agency that’s close by where I live, doesn’t even have any appointments, that’s is crazy.

by: Anonymous

Question: I expedited my passport for renewal and received notification that it was in process on 11/3/20. It's still in process and my trip is on 12/3. What should I do? That's only 13 days away.

Answer: As published on the State Department's website, expedited processing via mail takes 4 to 6 weeks to complete. Since you applied on 11/3, the passport should arrive between 12/1 and 12/15.

You may set an appointment at the closest regional passport agency for 72 hours before your scheduled trip to possibly get your passport. Note, however, that there are only limited appointments open for applicants with non-emergency travel reasons.

10 weeks and still no passport
by: Anonymous

Question: I applied for my son's passport 10 full weeks ago and no one can tell me why it’s still being processed. We fly out in 2 weeks. He is 1 year old. His father gave full consent, they have all the documents, now I’m being told I have to make an appointment at the NYC passport processing agency and pay all the fees again plus the cost to expedite it. Sounds like they are trying to get over on a parents. Knowing we will pay the extra money because we will not leave the country without our child. Calling in is useless because they don’t know anything all the can say is call back and check in tomorrow and that it’s still being processed. How can someone apply 10 weeks in advance and have this issue? It’s now 7/11 and I applied in 4/27 they received it 5/1. This is insane!!!! Now I have to pay the full cost of the passport and the expedition fee and if I don’t I will lose out on the $800 plane ticket I purchased. So cruel!!

Answer: Due to the season and the volume of applications, standard service now takes 6 to 8 weeks. This is just an approximation and may take longer than 8 weeks which is what could have happened to your application.

You may go to the NY regional agency to followup on the application. You do not have to pay the application fees anymore, just the expedite fee.

Have not received my passport
by: Anonymous

Question: My passport application was received on 5/2. I called last Thursday to expedite it and agreed to pay the additional $60.
In the system it still shows as routine service in process. I'm supposed to fly out next Thursday 6/6. I have called several times and I'm not getting any help other than what I can see online on my own. Can I go to a passport agency or since I mailed out all my documents there's nothing I can do?

Answer: Please understand that it takes time for the system to reflect the updates you made with your application. It does not mean the application is not being processed as you requested. Still, you may go to a passport agency to followup in person.

Passport still in Processing Status
by: Anonymous

Question: I applied for passport renewal 16 days ago and requested expedited. Still hasn't been received. I just keep being told it's processing. No one returns my calls and I leave in 2 days. Is there anything I can do?

Answer: If the status is already processing, the application has already been received. Expedited service takes 2 to 3 weeks to complete so it is still well within the processing time that you paid for.
