What is the fee to change your name on your passport?

Question: I have a valid passport that was issued a few years ago. It has my maiden name on it. I have filled out the DS-82 form, gotten 2 passport photos taken, and attached my Certificate of Marriage. What is the fee for this service? Would I add an additional $60 to that total to get it expedited? Thank you for your help!

Answer: The fee to renew a passport by mail using Form DS-82 is currently $110 for a passport book only. You can request a passport card at the same time for an additional $30.

Expedited service fee is $60. This reduces the processing time from 4-6 weeks to 2-3 weeks. If you choose this service, be sure to write the word "expedite" on the outside of the envelope so that agents can quickly identify your request.

For faster service, you either have to visit a regional agency or get a professional passport expediting service to submit the application for you.

Question: I got my passport while I was in the military in 2011. I have since been divorced, and now remarried. I have all documentation required to justify name changes (from passport to divorce to remarriage). Can I still utilize Form DS-82?

Answer: If you are using your military passport to obtain a civilian passport, you may use Form DS-82. However, your military passport will not be returned to you.

If you want to keep your military passport, you may apply for a civilian passport using Form DS-11 and submit all the requirements set forth by the Department of State. You may submit your military passport as evidence of U.S. citizenship and it will be returned to you once the process is completed.

Question: I got married in August last year; for some reason, marriage certificates in FL do not show that the last name changed. I already changed my driver's license and social security. What do I have to send, any additional documents?

Answer: If you are applying for a passport for the first time, you only need to send evidence of citizenship (birth certificate), and your driver's license bearing your current legal name, among other requirements.

Question: I will be married in June this year, but am still finishing studies abroad. I would like to change my last name when I marry but do not have the time to wait for a new passport to come in before I leave the country and my return flight is currently under my maiden name. Can I change my name from overseas? Should I continue to go by my maiden name until my studies are over? How long do I have to make an official name change request after I am married?

Answer: You may continue to use the passport in your maiden name until you're done with your studies overseas. Or you can wait until you're back overseas before changing your name. In fact, this is the most uncomplicated way to go since your ticket is also booked in your maiden name.

If you choose to change the name on your passport overseas, you may do so at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate, whichever is closest to where you reside.

I don't think I will have time to change it and recieve a new passport before we leave. If I have to change my name on passport, what is the quickest way for me to do this?

Be aware that we have received messages from women who were delayed due to the name difference but have never heard of anyone being denied boarding.
