Should my fiancee renew her passport?
Question: I am going to get married on the 18th of June and we will leave the country for vacation on the 21st. On the marriage license we requested her last name be changed to my last name. I talked to the clerks office and they said that after the priest signs your marriage license, they will issue our marriage certificate in 2 weeks. That means we will not have our marriage certificate while we are entering into the US.
Is that going to be create a problem for my fiancee to re-enter to the US due to her last name has changed and we don't have any proof of it?
Answer: There should be no problem as long as the name in your fiancee's passport is the same as that on her driver's license and Social Security Card.
Just be sure to reserve her airline ticket in her maiden name. The Secure Flight Program requires that the name on the airline ticket/boarding pass match the government-issued ID that is presented.
Your fiancee should request a name change for her passport upon return from the honeymoon and the arrival of the marriage certificate.
