May I use a 24 hour emergency renewed passport for TSA ID for travel within the United States?

by Mary
(Berkeley California)

I am traveling from Oakland California to Portland Oregon in 3 days. I just found out tonight that my driver's license is suspended due to my not paying DMV car registration renewal fees because of an ongoing dispute arising from a minor non-moving violation.

Because TSA requires government issued valid photo id to travel within the US, if my drivers license remains suspended I will need my passport renewed to travel in 3 days.

I will begin my attempt to un-suspend my drivers license first thing tomorrow morning when the DMV opens, but want to check out passport options in case my license can not be reissued in time for my trip.

The purpose of my trip is to take my daughter to visit prospective colleges. The trip can not be rescheduled because all the travel and hotel rooms have been paid for and are non-refundable. Additionally, it is imperative that my daughter attend these college visits as she is in the throes of the college application process, which is already unbelievably laborious and complex, even without the added tension of a chaotic mother who didn't realize her drivers license had been suspended.

Is there any hope in getting my passport renewed via the 24 hour process.

I meet the eligibility requirements to file by mail with form ds82...i.e. my passport was issued in 1997, I am well over the age of 16 and have been for many many years, I have possession of the expired, undamaged passport.

I live within 10 miles of the San Francisco passport office.

a quick response will ease my mind considerably (and the mind of my worried and slightly peeved daughter, who is a dear sweet girl and does not deserve to suffer because of her mom's ineptitude.) Assuming I can get a quick turn around on the passport.

Thank you for your speedy (hopefully!) reply.

Mary,

It is possible to get your passport renewed in 24 hours or less, especially given the fact you live in San Francisco.

You have two options. One, you can visit the San Francisco Passport Agency yourself. The State Department website says you have to make an appointment first but many applicants have visited the agency without one.

If you want to do this, just arrive when the San Francisco agency opens at 9:00 am. Take the completed application form DS-82, your most recent passport, two recent passport photos (taken within the last 6 months) and a check or money order for payment. The application fee is $75 and the expedited service fee is $60. You will also need to present your Social Security card.

If you prefer to have a professional expediter submit your application so that you can use your time for other travel preparations, we recommend Travel Visa Pro which is located in San Francisco approximately 2.5 miles from the regional agency.

The first step is to apply online and then deliver you documents to their office at the following address.

2021 Fillmore St.
San Francisco, CA 94115
