Is it faster to renew your expired passport or get a new passport?

Question: I need mine by the 2nd week of May. I live in Roanoke, VA and it expired last year.

Answer: It takes the State Department Bureau of Consular Services the same amount of time to process a passport renewal as it does an application for a new passport. Regular processing takes 4-6 weeks.

However, it will be faster (and less costly) for you to renew your expired passport since renewals do not require you to appear before an agent nor pay the execution fee.
