Question: I last used my passport o return to the USA from Tijuana BC. I realized yesterday that my passport was missing as I was going over my checklist of things I need.
I live in Reno, Nevada. What do I need to do? What documents do I need to obtain a new passport?
I have a Social Security card, Nv state-issued ID and a couple of older expired passports. Please reply asap.
Answer: The first thing you need to do is report your lost passport. Note, once you report the loss, the passport will be canceled and you cannot use it again if found. The number to call is 1-877-487-2778.
The process to replace a lost passport requires you to apply for a new passport. This means that you must appear in person and submit the completed but unsigned application form DS-11. Along with this form, you need to present evidence of U.S. citizenship, proof of identification, a copy of the ID and two passport pics.
You have two option for replacing your lost passport in less than two weeks. One, you can schedule an appointment and visit the San Francisco Passport Agency. You are required to present evidence of urgent travel plans. The agency offers same day service if necessary.
The second option is to employ the services of a qualified passport expediter. The advantage is that you will not be required to travel to San Francisco. The disadvantage is that you will be required to pay the expediter a service fee beyond that which you pay to the U.S. government. The amount depends on how quickly you want to get your passport expedited.
