How long can you stay in a foreign country on a passport?

by Ashley
(Baumholder, Germany)

Question: I am a spouse of a military service member who is serving in Germany. I am currently in Germany staying with my husband. I just want to know if I have to fly back to the US and return to Germany due to any type of passport policies, or if I am allowed to be in Germany on just a passport for the duration of his tour.

Answer: Under the NATO Status of Forces Agreement, members of the US Armed Forces and their dependents are exempt from German laws and regulations relating to aliens. When entering Germany, they must be in possession of a copy of their orders and a military identification card. Dependents should have a military identification card and a valid passport containing certification or a stamp by the military authorities indicating their dependent status. Private household staff is subject to the regular visa requirements and has to apply for a residence and work permit.

Question: I'm taking a trip to Ireland this year from December 29th to February 27th. How long am I required to wait until I can travel there again?

Answer: There is no note in the State Department's page on travel to Ireland that says you need to wait for a certain period before re-entering. All it says is that you are able to travel to Ireland visa-free for up to 90 days and your passport only needs to be valid for the duration of your stay.

Also, it is recommended that you show proof of sufficient funds to sustain your stay in their country.
