How is the 15 year passport renewal date calculated?

Question: My passport was issued exactly 15 years ago. I need a passport for a trip late this year. Is today the last date for renewal, or is December 31st of this year?


Answer: The 15 years is calculated from the date of issuance. You can no longer renew your passport by mail. It will be necessary to apply for a new passport by submitting form DS-11 in person at an application acceptance facility.

Question: Are passports renewed by 15 years by date or just year?

Answer: A passport may be renewed anytime during its validity and up to 5 years after its expiration. So you may send your passport in for a renewal up to 15 years after the date it was issued.
Is a deadline met when the application is delivered?

Question: My passport will be 15yrs. since issue on 9/6/16. I registered my mailed application and it was delivered 9/1/16. Is it safe to assume it will be accepted as meeting the deadline?
