Question: I applied for and got a 10 year Indian Visa dated 6 September 2007 to 5 September 2017. My US passport needs to be renewed but before I start the renewal process, I would like to know if the Indian Visa will be carried over to the new US passport.
Answer: When you apply for a passport renewal, you must submit your current passport. It will be returned to you after the process is completed. You then submit an application to the Indian embassy to have the visa transferred.
The remaining validity of India visas can be transferred to the new passport. So if you have a 10 year visa issued in 2007 and then transfer it in 2011, the visa issued in the new passport would be valid for the exact remaining validity. The process is identical to applying for a new India visa, however the cost is $38.
