Expiring passport question for travel abroad
(Mount Pleasant, SC USA)
Question: My husband will be traveling with my children to the Bahamas for Thanksgiving. My youngest child's passport expires in December and is in the process of being renewed.
Can my child still travel to and from the Bahamas with the remaining time she has on her still valid passport? They will be out of the country for less than a week Nov. 23-28 2010. Her passport expires in December.Answer:
If I understand correctly, you have already submitted an application for a new passport for your youngest child. If that is correct, then your child's current passport is no longer valid. Once the State Department receives a passport application, any previous passport is canceled, thereby turning it invalid.
If you had not submitted the application for a new passport, then the current passport could be used for the trip to the Bahamas.

Current processing time for routine service is from 4 to 6 weeks. If you requested expedited service, the passport should arrive within 2 to 3 weeks. If the passport does not arrive by the end of this week, you may need to visit a regional passport agency in order to get the passport in time for the trip.
