Do I need to renew my passport before traveling to the Philippines since it is valid for 4 more months?

by Beth

Question: My passport will expire in June of this year. I'm traveling to the Philippines on Feb 25 and will be back here by March 16. Do I need to renew my passport before leaving? I think I have no time to renew it before I leave.

Answer: According to the State Department, U.S. citizens may enter the Philippines without a visa for tourism purposes upon presentation of their U.S. passport, valid and unexpired at the time of entry, and a return ticket to the United States or an onward ticket to another country.

Based on these requirements, you don't need to renew your passport before leaving. However, the State Department recommends that U.S. citizens start the process of passport renewal 9 months before its expiry.

You only have one week to renew your passport so you must either visit the Philadelphia passport agency or apply through a professional passport expediter.
