Do I need a new passport if I added my married name to my original last name?

by Kourtney
(Sauk Rapids, MN, USA)

Hello,

I was recently married and added my husband's last name to my full maiden name. There is no hyphen, just a space and two last names.

My new social security card has the full married name on it, but my old passport only has the original, without my husband's name.

Thanks,
Kourtney

Kourtney,

The name in your passport should be your legal name. If your name was legally changed at marriage, then you need to change the name in your passport. The new Secure Flight Program of the Transportation Security Administration requires the name on reservations and your boarding pass to exactly match the name in your passport. Passengers have been banned from boarding flights because their names were different on these documents.
