Do I get to keep my old passport?

I have an Indian Visa that is valid for 2 more years. They have told me that the visa is valid as long as I carry both my old and new passports to India. I am planning to go to India in December and my passport expires in November. I have to renew my passport but want to save money on the visa.

Whomever you spoke with is correct. Your current passport will be returned to you along with the new one when you apply for a renewal. Just take both passports with you when you travel to India.

The State Department recommends that passport holders apply to renew their passport approximately 9 months before they expire. Since yours expires in November, I encourage you to submit the application soon.
