Can I travel outside of the U.S. if I didn't put my destination on my passport application?

by Nazariy
(Brockport, NY USA)

Question: I submitted my passport application and didn't put where I'm traveling because I'm not planning on traveling soon. But if in case of emergency I have to travel (most of my family lives outside the U.S., including aging grandparents),can I travel as soon as I get my passport? And if not, what is the time limit of not being able to travel?

Answer: You can travel outside the United States the day you receive your passport. There is no waiting period.

Many Americans obtain passports without having specific travel plans. This information is only really required of applicants who request expedited service. In order to have a passport application expedited, the applicant must prove that they have a departure date within two weeks or less from the date the form is submitted.
