Will I lose 5 or more months if I renew my passport early? by: Anonymous
Question: I am renewing my passport either by the end of February 2015 or early March 2015. (That is well inside the 9 months window for renewing my passport which expires on October 18, 2015). My question is: Will you lose the time, let say, they issue it on May 1, 2015, does that mean I lose 5 and a half months of the old passport? Or will they issue it on October 19, 2015 even though I will be receiving it well in advance of October 2015. Please let me know. Thanks.
Answer: The passport you submit for renewal will be invalidated. The new passport will have 10 years of validity from the date of issuance. Any validity remaining on your old passport when you apply for a renewal will be lost.
The recommendation to renew a passport approximately 9 months before it's expiration date is to guarantee that you have a passport with at least six months of validity since many countries have this entry requirement. If you have no plans to visit one of these countries, you can wait until there is only 6-8 weeks of validity remaining before you submit the passport renewal application form.
