Can a passport be renewed before it expires?
Question: My 18-year-old is getting married in October of this year. Her current passport, which she got as a minor, expires in the same month. The bride and groom are planning their honeymoon in Italy in shortly after the wedding.
Will her current passport be good for the honeymoon on October 10-16 if her current passport expires in the same month and then when she returns she can get a new passport with her new married legal name? Or should we just get her a new passport now?Answer:
Your daughter's passport cannot be used for her honeymoon. Italy
requires passports to have at least 3 months validity beyond the period of stay in that country. Your daughter needs to "renew" her passport before her trip.
Since she was a minor when her current passport was issued, she must apply for a new passport
by appearing at a passport application acceptance facility
and submitting form DS-11
and all supporting documents. She can do this before her current passport expires.
It is recommended that your daughter apply approximately 90 days before her wedding and subsequent honeymoon. Note, it will be necessary for her to submit the passport application AND purchase tickets to Italy in her maiden name. The Secure Flight Program of the TSA requires names of passengers on tickets and in passports match exactly.
After your daughter returns from her honeymoon, she should apply for a passport name change
if she plans to change her name through marriage. There is no fee for the name change if the request is made within one year from the date the passport is issued.
